Maths
Within the Mathematics department here at Torquay Academy we believe that students should see that Mathematics is not just a subject to be studied, but is a vital life skill. If you look at almost any activity a person may carry out, there is a key mathematical skill underpinning what they are doing. This importance is why we want all to enjoy and see the importance of Mathematics. We want students to realise that a deeper understanding of mathematics opens up opportunities in many careers.
But we also want students to see the wonder of mathematics, how it is happening around them, from the importance of the golden ratio in design, to how it also appears in the swirl of a snails shell or a cauliflower. We want them to realise that Mathematics crops up in places you would never expect, why when you divide the length of a river by the straight line distance from source to mouth you get pi! Something that many would expect to see only in calculations with circles.
Mathematics can be a subject of wonder and amazement, it is a vital life skill and a key qualification and we want students to realise it is this and just a grade for a CV.
