World Youth Contender Champion and Ten Tors Training...
Kacper is World Youth Contender Champion and Jakub wins Silver!
Kacper Piwowar in Year 7 has won the U13 Boys Singles at the WTT Youth Contender in Tunis! He has become the winner of WTT Tunis, World Table Tennis Tunis Youth Series.
Kacper was up against Youssef Aidli of the host nation. Kacper led 2-0 after digging in to clinch a close second game. His opponent stormed back to level but the English player dug in again to take the decider 11-4 and complete a 3-2 (11-6, 13-11, 7-11, 6-11, 11-4) victory to top the podium.
This is an incredible achievement and we are all very proud of him. Well done Kacper!
Jakub Piwowar in Year 9 won the silver medal U15 boys at the WTT Tunis. He won his semi-final 3:0 against the number 1 seeded player from Austria. In the final Jakub played really well, but the opponent from France was stronger. Amazing achievement for our young player. His 100% commitment to the sport and hard work pays off now. Congratulations, Jakub, a fantastic achievement and we are all proud of you.
Ten Tors training
Ten Tors Training this weekend took place on the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. Friday night was kit check for preparation for a 0630hrs meet at school Saturday morning. With the last minute checks complete they boarded the mini buses and headed to the mountains.
Arriving at the drop off point the 35 and 45 Mile teams parted company to take on an adventure for some a first time in the mountains. Beautiful clear skies and a strong wind made for a demanding first few hours walking. The first peak for the 45 team was Corn Du and then on to the famous Pen Y Fan. The highest point in the Brecons often visited but the Military Special Forces.
The first top for the 35 Mile team was Fan Y Big. A favourite spot for a photo. Moving on, both teams passed each other around another peak named Cribyn. The 35 mile team took to contouring around Cribyn. With the hardened 45s taking out the top. With the wind still gusting and the views of the valleys below, both team dug deep to keep going. The main focus of the day was working as a team and making good navigational decisions.
As the 35 mile team walked off they encountered a group in difficulties. Mr Whelan will pick up the story here:
As we descended the Neudd ridge at 1700 we were approached by several groups telling us about a group in difficulty and asking if we could help them. After a quick conversation, Mr Brett led our cadets down the hill to the minibus and myself and Tony Jackson (a volunteer leader) approached the group to see if they needed our help. One of them had injured their ankle and was unable to walk off the hill and was suffering from the rapidly declining temperature. Myself and Tony stayed with the group using our equipment as they had little equipment of their own to warm the group up and wait for Brecon Mountain rescue team. They arrived at the scene two and a half hours later and checked the casualty over before taking over from us. We then walked ourselves off the ridge in the dark as the sun had set an hour earlier getting picked up at 2030. We have been told the casualty was delivered to an ambulance and taken to hospital several hours later after being carried off the hill on a stretcher. All the Mountain rescue teams in the UK are staffed entirely by volunteers who give up their time to rescue those in distress.
Thanks to Mr Whelan and Tony Jackson for taking control of a serious situation that could without their intervention, could have ended up much worse.
Back at the camp site, The teams quickly set to work on camp admin, ensuring everyone had a hot meal in preparation for a good nights sleep under canvas.
First light saw the teams awake. Breakfast and clear up followed by packing up before moving in the mini busses to a climbing and abseiling site organised by Mr Bez. The students demonstrated great personal skills pushing past some personal lines and achieving things they thought they would never achieve. The travel back to the school was a quiet one as everyone reflected in their sleep how much they had achieved over the weekend.
Year 11 PPE Results
We were unable to host our year 11 results evening on Tuesday, therefore students were given their results in school on Wednesday morning. We are very proud of how hard they are working and we look forward to seeing them all reap the rewards of their hard work in the summer.
Year 10 Rock!
Our year 10 musicians have been working hard on their current unit, Genre Studies, focusing this half term on rock music and the many subgenres within it. In developing their understanding of how rock music originated and the musical features that define it, they have turned theory into practice! This week the year 10 students took over The Platform and put on their own mini-concert. Not only did they choose their own performance pieces but they also managed the sound, lighting, and effects entirely by themselves! The camaraderie and collaboration shared between students in the class is wonderful and has contributed greatly to the first-class performances produced by all. Well done!
PAA – Oliver
With the final performances still a few months away, it is amazing how far the students have progressed recently. It was wonderful to see them rehearse on Tuesday evening, they are all so talented.
Year 7 Maths
In Mrs Kirby’s Maths class students have been looking at finding fractions of amounts by finding a fraction of a set of objects or quantity. This follows on from their previous work on representing, simplifying and finding equivalent fractions.
Students were able to build their competency in this topic by initially using multi link cubes to show Mrs Kirby ½, ¼ & ¾ of an amount, if 8 cubes represented the whole. Mrs Kirby was then able to show the class how they could progress to using pictorial methods by drawing bar models to represent, and to help solve, the calculations. Using this mastery approach allows students to explore and demonstrate mathematical ideas, enrich their learning experience and deepen their understanding.
It was great to see how well the students were able to develop their understanding in this topic with some excellent examples of using bar models to solve problems in their workbooks.

Congratulations to the following students: Leah Harman – Year 12, Lizzy Cameron, Emilie Cartwright-Lomax, Erin Colclough, Will Bevan, Mya Green, and Hannah Carr, William Reed, Kole Gjikolaj, and Will Harrison – Year 10. Super effort from the students completing their awards during a difficult time. Well done!
Lego Therapy in Lower G
Students visit the SEN area of the school for many reasons and whilst there complete many different activities, one of which is Lego Therapy. We have many different Lego kits, some of the most popular include Harry Potter and Star Wars. The students love spending time building these kits, whilst helping them build and develop strong and lasting friendships.
Bake Off – House Competition
On Wednesday, 16 Year 7 students competed to create an afternoon tea item for Mr Margetts to enjoy in our latest house competition. Each team had only an hour to prepare, cook and decorate their dish before I arrived to sample their delectable creations. Mrs Haines’ food technology room was a hive of activity as the amateur chefs, mixed, whisked, measured and sieved. Each item was presented and I had to select the winning piece. The task was very difficult as everybody had excelled themselves and many of the dishes were incredibly creative. I was not allowed to know who prepared each item and what house they represented, until the winners were selected. I spent much time deliberating as the results were so impressive but eventually selected a winner. The results are as follows:
In third place, Darwin – High Tea prepared by Matilda Stevens and Daisy Hellier
In second place, Brunel – Fruit Tarts prepared by Lena Galazkiewicz and Bailey Heaward
In first place, Kitson – Chocolate Oreo and Strawberry Cake prepared by Chloe Burton and Lora Cadman
A wonderful time was had by all and Kitson are currently the proud holders of the house cup.
This week at Team TA, we have truly demonstrated what we are all about! From encouraging as many students to get involved and participate in house sport and establish a love for physical activity, to local, county, national and even international excellence! We are very proud of all of our students and their various successes this week.
House Sports Week!
It has been so much fun in the PE Department this week, with each year group (7-10) participating in their Cycle 3 House Competitions.
On Tuesday the Year 7s and 8s competed in basketball (boys) and football (girls), on Thursday, the Year 10s played dodgeball (boys) and football (girls) whilst the Year 9 boys competed in football whilst the girls played basketball.
It was fiercely competitive, but fantastic to see hundreds of students participating, giving their all for their house and having fun.
Dolce Zulhayir National Schools Equestrian Association Finals
We are very proud to share with you that Dolce and her pony, Dudley, has managed to secure Torquay Academy a Golden Ticket to the National Schools Equestrian Association Finals in October!
Dolce & Dudley travelled to Pontispool in Somerset last weekend to compete in an NSEA Show Jumping Competition including a qualifying opportunity for the national finals. Because of this, the competition was very well attended with many competitors wanting to secure Golden Tickets.
Dolce was competing individually, which meant that it was much harder for her to qualify as many schools have teams of 4 (significantly increasing their chances to qualify). As an individual, they only have 2 places in each class and some classes have over 40 riders in each. This meant that Dolce and Dudley needed to be clear of jumping faults and have a tactical speedy jump off round to be in with any chance. Dolce has been working hard at home with Dudley with local trainers Cameron Beer and Oliver Tuff (who has jumped in the Great British Show Jumping Team) and it’s safe to say the hard work paid off this weekend.
Well done, Dolce, we are all very proud of you!
U16 Netball vs Stover
A selection of players within TA Netball Academy played against Stover School last Friday in an Under 16 netball fixture. The girls made a strong start, with impressive defensive performances from Lauren, Mia and Summer which forced several turnovers to end the first quarter 10-1. In the second and third quarter, our shooters, Lily, Tammy and Brooke maintained their consistency and added an extra 8 goals to the scoreline, ending the third quarter 18-1. In the final quarter, our centre court players, Elisha and Lydia ensured that the team finished strong through their leading in order to create opportunities to get the ball down the court. The game ended with TA winning 24-1.
The girls made TA proud and we look forward to seeing them in action again in two weeks time against Torquay Girls Grammar School.
U16 Netball Academy: Elisha Perrow, Mia Denby, Skye Warner, Lily Unsworth, Lauren Major, Summer Connoly, Tammy Westacott, Brooke Tully and Lydia Bevan

Players left to right – Lucas Berry, Oliver Jones, Diego Zulhayir, Charlie Frankum, Sam Alcock, Seth Margetts, Oscar Hughes, Colby Britton, Gregg Hindom, Toby Lee, Joe Taylor, Will Jackson, Bastian Johns-Kouadio, Harrison Hogg, Austin White, Charlie Green
Year 9 Netball vs TGGS
The Year 9 Netball Academy played against Torquay Girls Grammar on Monday. The girls made a strong start, ending the first quarter with just 4 goals between each team. In the second and third quarter, our shooters, Brooke and Elspeth continued to keep the scoreline close and added an extra 5 goals to the tally, ending the third quarter 14-8 to the opposition. In the final quarter, our defensive players, Emily, Maisy and Rosie marked tightly and did well to slow down some strong attacking plays, however the game ended with TA losing 19-10.
Congratulations to Brooke Tully who was voted player of the match.
Post 16 Boys Football vs TBGS
On Wednesday we played TBGS in the semi final of the U18 county cup, the result was a 2-0 win to us with the goals coming from Reece Shaw and Tor Swann to take us into the final against either Kings Ottery or Plymstock. The result was even more impressive due to the team only having one previous game together due to different rules in this competition. We look forward to playing in the final and hopefully we can take home the cup.
Grace’s Success in Athletics
Great results at the weekend! Following on from the Series of Devon Indoor Sportshall Athletics Events, a team was formed from various Devon athletics clubs to represent Devon in the Sportshall UK Championships Regional Final 2022. This was held last Saturday 19 March at Torbay Leisure Centre. Grace was part of the U15 girls’ team participating in shotput and relay doing very well against some of the best. Their team won 1st place overall!
