Velodrome House Finals, Ten Tors and new Tubers club
Velodrome house finals
Last Friday we held the finals of TA’s house cycling competition. It took place at the Olympic velodrome Newport Wales. Students were selected for the event with speed trials on the static bikes in our fitness suite with the top 4 in the year qualifying. The event involved a coaching session for 1.5 hours followed by a 1 or 2 lap race for the year 7s and 8s. The event was highly competitive with some excellent performances from students who had mostly never experienced the velodrome facility. Congratulations to all who qualified.
Ten Tors
This morning our Ten Tors teams headed up to Dartmoor to get ready for their 7.00am start tomorrow morning. I look forward to sharing news about their progress next week.
TA Tubers
We are very proud of the wide range of clubs that we have on offer after school. This week a new club started at Tubers on Lymington Road. Each week a group of year 7s will walk down to Tubers where they will be learning the ins and outs of content creation and a host of digital media skills. So far they’ve been through an introduction to the amazing kit they have at Tubers as well as introductory training in cameras and microphones.
History
In History with Miss Cape, the year 7s have been finishing off their enquiry into How far religion in England changed under the Tudor dynasty. They have been studying the religious changes under each Tudor Monarch. Students have then used source material to consider whether people at the time supported the changes or were just trying to avoid execution for the crime of Heresy. The final lesson this week required students to apply all of their learning from the cycle to explain what happened to the Rood Screen of a local church in Devon.
Miss Cape’s year 10 class have been learning about the impact of Hitler and the Nazis on the lives of ordinary Germans. They have been working with our PGCE teacher over the last few weeks to develop their analysis of interpretations and sources.
Year 11 sit their first of three GCSE History exams on Thursday 19th May. This exam focuses on Whitechapel and Crime and Punishment Through Time. In preparation for this students have been completing big overviews of the key themes so they can then practice applying this knowledge to a range of 12 and 16 mark questions. We wish them lots of luck!!
Boulder Bunker
A group of year 9 students participated in a group activity at the Boulder Bunker. This was to approach some positive engagement and to develop positive relationships with staff.
House News for the Summer Term
This term will be a very busy one in terms of house events and activities. The Year 7 Student Voice Committee met yesterday to begin planning their end of term charity event following the success of the Spring Fayre. Many interesting ideas were discussed and I will be able to reveal them once the final decision has been made.
Our first event will be a collaborative one involving students from a number of year groups and the assistance of several departments. Students will be designing a house shield for each of our eight groups. The shield will display the house name and motto as well as pictorial representations of the house values. The finished products will be centrally displayed and will be a wonderful legacy for all those involved in the design and creation.
After half-term we will also be holding a knock-out Blockbusters’ competition; some parents may remember this popular teenage quiz from their youth. Currently, Kitson is the holder of the house cup but this could well change and any house could take the title for the final competition of the year.
Our Year 8 students have been working really hard on their oracy project where each tutorial group has learned a poem -which represents the values of their house-by heart. Each group is due to present their poem next week and there will be prizes for the best performances.
Finally, the Year 7 students will be helping to welcome our new Year 7 students into their houses next year and are really keen to let people know why their house is the best house. If any Year 6 students have a real desire to belong to a particular group because of the values, figurehead, colour or affiliation, it would be wonderful to hear about it.
Year 12 Visit University of Exeter
Last Friday, Year 12 were taken on a trip to the University of Exeter to learn more about university life and the opportunities available to them if they choose this pathway. The university’s student ambassadors took the group on a tour around the beautiful Streatham Campus and described many factors of what being a student at university is like. Topics such as: teaching modes and the shift towards more independent study; accommodation factors to consider and what it’s like to live on campus; the financial aspects such as student loans and the various bursaries that are available; wellbeing and health care; the social side of university life such as the student union and a plethora of societies that they can join. This was then followed by a more formal talk in one of the main lecture halls with hints and tips to support students’ own applications. After 2 years of being unable to visit these sorts of places, it was fantastic to be able to meet other students face to face and walk around the spaces to get a really good impression of what life could be like at university. It was a brilliant day and all students are keen to get underway with their UCAS applications in the coming weeks!
Geography excellence
Everyone has been working really hard in Geography. All of the Geography teachers have been very impressed with the work that pupils have been doing.
In Miss Nash’s classes, Year 7 are starting their new topic about Climate and Weather and have made a great start. A special shout goes out to Connor Dean, Julia Tatarynowicz and Phoebe Smith in 7Q7 for their hard work and effort during the last cycle of work where they learnt all about Ecosystems.
Year 8 are at the beginning of their new topic of Population and Settlement and have been really getting to grips with getting information from the atlases. Lizzie Blackmore was particularly brilliant at this in her lesson this week. Well done Lizzie!
Year 9 are learning all about London and its importance within the UK. This is part of their topic about Urban Change. They have already learnt about Lagos in Nigeria, and soon they will be able to compare and contrast the issues of the two cities.
Year 10 are just finishing off their learning about Weather Hazards for their GCSE and have learnt about the formation of tropical storms. They’ve done really well, and a special shout out needs to go to Nadia Wisnik, William Reed, Layla Batten, William Reed and Felicity Chapman for their excellence in lessons.
Later in the term they will be visiting Dawlish as part of one of their fieldwork investigations where they will look closely at the coastline to follow up their earlier topic of Coastal Landscapes of the UK. All the geography staff are really looking forward to taking our brilliant Geographers, and hoping for sunshine!
U12 South Devon Cup Final vs TBGS
Our year 7s played in their first final together this week against TBGS, the game was a great one to watch with plenty of action and chances for both teams. It was clear to see that both schools were very strong which made it difficult for each team to break the deadlock. TBGS took the lead in the second half with a deflected shot that crept inside the post, this changed our mindset knowing we had to chase an equaliser so we made some changes and put Miko upfront to add to our attacking threat. The change worked with Miko scoring for us to take the game to extra time. The 14 minutes extra time flew by with no change to the score taking us to penalties.
Both teams scored their 5 penalties taking it to sudden death which is always hard. Unfortunately there is always going to be someone that has to miss and on this occasion it was us, with TBGS going on to win.
This year 7 group has been amazing all year and they have continued to grow and gel as a team and us as coaches now also have a much better rapport with the players to continue to build for next year. I’m excited to see how they keep improving, especially now they have that burning desire to not have that feeling of just missing out again.
U16 South Devon Cup Final vs TBGS

Our year 11s had their final game together as a team and what better way to do it than in a cup final. It’s been an up and down year for the 11s with exam prep, players missing, opposition cancelling on us so to be able to get the boys together to play was great in the end.
It was always going to be a tough task against a very strong TBGS team but a game that the boys were wanting to prove they could have a go at even with a group of players that had only played together once this year.
Deservedly we took the lead through a goal from Harley Sneap within the first few minutes and then added to that with a header from Will Bevan to take us into the break 2-0 up.
The second half was a different story with the opposition showing their experience and grabbing a couple of early goals in the second half that propelled them into their next gear.
TA worked hard and put in what they could but didn’t have enough left to stop them from scoring again. Grammar went on to win the final but the boys put a shift in on the day.
It was great to see some of the lads play again after missing so much school football over the last two years. I’m looking forward to working with those who are staying on for our 6th form and football programme and I’m sure they will thrive in the environment we create here at TA.
Year 8, 9 & 10 Netball Game

A combination of Team TA’s Year 8 and 9 Netball Academy players went up against the Year 10 Netball Academy in a 4-quarter game on Wednesday. A competitive atmosphere was created from the start, with the first quarter ending 4-1 to the Year 10’s. However, the Year 8 and 9’s gained confidence throughout the second and third quarter, bringing the scoreline to 7-4. The final quarter was a nail biter, after the Year 8 and 9’s continued to shoot with consistency, narrowly ending the game 8-6. Well done to all those academy players involved, Miss Lewis was impressed by the quality of netball displayed from all year groups which has been created through each player’s commitment and hard work to the netball academy.
