School Values, Languages, PSHE and pies for charity

Listen

European Day of Languages

Year 7 celebrated European Day of Languages this week which included “Dress a Door” competition.

Year 7s Raise Money for Charity

The year 7s have raised a total of £117.50 for the children’s charity VICTA. The winner was Lora Cadman who won a selection of sweets, two cream pies in my face and a bucket of cold water over Mr Christopher’s head. Lora was assisted by her friend Amelia Rose. Mr Christophers will be running in the London Marathon tomorrow.

PSHE Drop Down Day

The first of our PSHE days happened on Monday and it was lovely to be able to welcome visitors back in. The year 7 students had a day based on health, including healthy relationships and mental health. We also had some doctors from Torbay Hospital who taught our students first aid including chest compressions and how to use a defibrillator.

Mental health also featured with the year 8 sessions, along with aspects of ‘living in the wider world’ such as gambling, how the world of work is changing and what is involved in being a parent.

Year 9 students experienced sessions ranging from preventing STIs, the importance of sleep to being aware of online fraud.

The year 10 day again varied from the impact of drugs to the issues with an unplanned pregnancy and how to manage unwanted attention.

Students in years 8-11 also had the benefit of a theatre production on coercive control and abusive relationships.

The year 11s had a work-based day with sessions encouraging them to find the right career, the best career path and the chance to write a CV. Throughout the day students had the opportunity to have a one-to-one mock interview with an employer. We appreciate the time that the employers gave to support our students with this.

The sixth form sessions are designed to support them when they leave us, such as how to manage a good work/life balance, basic cooking and car maintenance skills.

Year 9 food

You can always guarantee that you will leave the food rooms feeling hungry!

Heads of House

The heads of house have a very important role in motivating the students in their different teams and instilling them with a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition. Once a term we have a special house assembly which is delivered by the house leads and celebrates values relevant to each inspirational figure whom our houses are named after. Additionally, house leaders take a vested interest in all students in their house -particularly those who have excelled in academic, sporting or creative fields.

Perhaps the most important job for our heads of house however is the presentation of certificates for the house and homework stars of the week. Those students who are awarded house stars are presented with a certificate and star badge in their house colour, this will then be followed by a praise phone call home. Those students who have been commended for excellent homework will also receive a certificate and  a special mention in this blog.

Over recent months the heads of house have their own competition running; this is to dress flamboyantly in their house colours when they make their presentations. Mr Chadwick -Head of Pengelly has always donned a fetching purple jacket on a Friday morning but recently other heads of house have followed suit. Each week the students eagerly await the arrival of their respective house leads to see how their outfits have become more outrageous from the previous Friday.  I am not sure who has the best (or is it the worst?) house coloured outfit…

Our values

Each morning, our students are reminded of our core values on the way into school and a reminder of the importance of being ready to learn.

Year 10 Netball Academy

The Year 10 Netball Academy travelled to Paignton this Tuesday to play in the Central Venue League against other schools from across South Devon.  The team of 14 girls all played brilliantly considering this was the first time they’d played together this season, winning 2 games and losing 2 games.  Miss Lewis and the PE department are extremely proud of the girls who have a positive season ahead of them.  Congratulations to Lily Unsworth who was voted our player of the tournament.

Team of 14 were:  Charlotte Sweeney, Grace Povey, Ellie Denby, Mia Denby, Penny Richards, Lily Unsworth, Evie Sutton, Ellie Chammings, Emily Graham, Freya Davies, Heidi Wright, Lauren Major, Skye Warner, Lily-Anne Hughes

Year 10 Girls Football

Following on from an outstanding netball performance, the Year 10 girls booked their place in the next round of the national cup with a dominant performance over St Cuthbert Mayne.

National cup progress

Congratulations to our Year 10 girls and Year 8 and 9 boys who have all progressed into the second round of the Elite Schools National Cup.  A great start to the season!

Rain doesn’t stop play!

There were a couple of heavy downpours this week and the sports hall has been very busy on occasions.  It is great to see so many sports going on side by side.

Tammy gets County Call Up

A huge congratulations to Tammy Westacott for being selected into the U14 County Netball Academy. This is an incredible achievement and we wish Tammy the best of luck in her very bright future netball career.

Sports Round Up

Year 10 Netball

Our year 10 girls recorded a victory on Monday against Cuthbert Mayne, it was fantastic to see the girls back playing and enjoying being part of a team again. This year group are so talented in many sports, and it is great to see.

Year 7 Boys Football

On Tuesday we had our first game for the year 7 boys, after a few weeks of trials and getting to know the boys this game came just a bit too early for us. We have a fantastic bunch of talented players that with time I’m sure will gel and become very competitive. Ivybridge beat us on the day but we are already looking forward to playing them again soon.

Year 8 Girls Football

On the same day our year 8 girls played Cuthbert Mayne in a crazy game, for many of the girls on both teams this was their first game for their respective schools after the covid hit year previously. We started well and looked good creating opportunities and eventually going in at half time 4-0 up. The second half was a different story, Cuthbert in the second half put their goal keeper out on pitch and she showed her class by changing the game completely to lead Cuthbert to the win on the final whistle. Again it was fantastic to see so many students playing that missed out last year.

6th Form Football

Thursday our 6th form started their campaign in the ESFA national cup, on a horrendous day with constant rain and the wind not letting up,  we travelled to Chuston with a mix of year 11’s and some 6th form students looking to get the win.

The game was really tough due to the conditions and we went into half time 0-0 , after a couple changes and some tweaks in positions we looked far better and started to take control of the game. Sean Coulson was the stand out change as he done a job second half as a centre forward, he normally plays at the back so to see him score 2 was just what we needed, Ryan Wilson scored also for us to win the game 3-0.

Hannah Runs Again!

On Sunday morning Hannah took on the Honiton Hippo Calf race. The 3k mix of trail, road, hills & thigh-high river crossing didn’t worry Hannah, she finished strongly as 1st female. Great running!
