Prom, Celebration Evenings and Above Water

Listen

Year 11 Prom

Our Year 11s looked incredible as they arrived for their Prom.  They have worked so hard over the past five years and they truly deserved their moment in the limelight.  They arrived in a wide variety of ways and then danced the night away. I look forward to seeing them for their results day in August.

You can view our full album on our Facebook page.

Whole School Assembly – Water Safety

We were delighted to welcome Above Water founder Brendan Prince to our end of year assembly.  He spoke to our students about water safety and how they can keep themselves, friends and family safe around the water this summer.

CCF

Flying, gliding, weapons raining, shooting, climbing, coasteering, mountain biking, mountaineering, Ten Tors and so much more. The Army and RAF Cadets have had such a busy term.

As we near the end of term and look forward to a well-deserved rest, planning continues as we develop the next chapter for the contingent. The summer break allows us to regroup and put together more exciting opportunities for the cadets.

The RAF will continue to take to the skies in the Grob Tutor and the cadet glider. We have been successful in gaining regular flying experiences for the whole of the RAF section with all having several flying slots. The RAF cadet training program has focused on leadership, flying, drones, first aid and outdoor activities to name a few. The RAF cadets are making regular visits to Chickerell Training camp which enables them to gain valuable experience and cadet qualifications. This has enabled recent promotions to LCpl, Cpl and Sgt positions.

The progressive Army syllabus has focused attention on field craft skills, living in the field constructing shelters, cooking and admin in the field, Army section tactics, drill and weapons training. Getting to cadet camp has been a huge undertaking as weapons training dominated the training program. The cadets have been amazing at taking the task on and proving that they can take on a huge training program to be considered for camp. More recently establishing a regular slot on the indoor Dismountable Close Combat Training (DCCT) facility used by the regular forces at Wyvern Barracks.

Collectively the contingent has set up links with other schools, ATC and ACF cadet establishments. This allows us to share our resources and qualifications. It is great to see that our cadets simply get tusked into activities with other cadet organisations creating an amazing opportunity working through social skills.

The cadets have all had the opportunity to push outdoor activities, namely, coasteering, climbing, hiking, mountain biking to name a few. The contingent work very closely with the schools Adventure Academy securing regular slots after school. The new term will see kayaking which again the cadets will be involved in.

The cadet staff have all been working extremely hard to make sure quality and qualifications are gained to ensure we can deliver the best that’s out there. Everyone is very excited for the next chapter in the school cadet experience. We eagerly await a Royal Navy section which will bring the contingent operating with the 3 services, Army, Royal Airforce and Navy.

Get involved, we are always on the lookout for adult volunteers to work with us. If you believe you can help in any way, please contact the school’s SSI, ccf@tqacademy.co.uk

Year 6 Induction Day

We were delighted to welcome our new Year 7s on Thursday this week.  We were very impressed with them all and I was delighted to hear how much they had enjoyed their day.  We look forward to welcoming them to TA in September.

Ice Lolly Sale

Our brilliant 6th Form leaders have been selling ice pops at the end of the day this week.  A great way to end a hot day!

Oxford University Residential

Oxford was incredible! We arrived on the Sunday and had some free time to explore the city, and then we went back to the Uni and had a pizza party! We then had tours at other colleges on the Monday and had our first taster lectures. We did human rights law, which was really interesting, and then looked at one of the earliest recorded texts ever written in the English lecture. On Tuesday, we looked in the Ashmolean museum which had a large amount of historical art pieces and statues, and this was followed by History and Classics lectures. We looked at early Greek and Roman mythology in the classics lecture and prostitution in the 16th/17th century Spain in the history lecture, which was really interesting as it is something not taught in the curriculum. Wednesday was the open day, where we looked at multiple colleges around Oxford, which gave us more of an idea of where we may want to apply to later this year and also helped us have an idea of what to put in personal statements. It was a really great experience, and we met some really lovely people too, which made it even more rememberable!

Exeter College Visit

Technology Department

The visit to the Exeter College Technology Department proved to be an enriching and educational experience for the students. They were able to witness first hand the practical applications of motor vehicle maintenance, engineering, and aeronautical engineering. The tour of facilities and the participation in the tyre changing challenge enhanced their understanding of these fields and provided them with valuable insights into potential career paths. The visit not only inspired the students but also highlighted the importance of such vocational education in preparing them for future endeavours in the technology industry.
Overall, the visit was a resounding success, and the students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with professionals and experience the practical aspects of motor vehicle maintenance, engineering, and aeronautical engineering. The visit to Exeter College Technology Department undoubtedly contributed to broadening their horizons and inspiring their future aspirations in the technology field.

Construction Department

On 6th July, a group of 14 Year 10 students visited the Exeter College Construction Centre. The purpose of the visit was to provide the students with an opportunity to explore various construction trades and gain practical experience in carpentry, electrical work, civil engineering, and bricklaying.

During the visit, the students participated in taster sessions in each of the four trades. The sessions were designed to give them a hands-on experience and a glimpse into the different aspects of the construction industry. The students rotated through the sessions, spending a set amount of time in each trade.

The college lecturers were impressed with the level of skills our students demonstrated, many have been studying construction BTEC since Year 9. Particular stand-outs were:

Jake Green on electrical
JayJay Ward on carpentry
Reece Spink on bricklaying

The visit provided valuable insights into the skills and knowledge required for each trade, as well as the potential career opportunities available in the construction sector. The students were enthusiastic and actively engaged in the activities, demonstrating their interest in pursuing vocations in the construction industry.

Overall, the visit was a success in terms of achieving its objectives of providing hands-on experience, promoting career exploration, and inspiring students to consider future pathways in the construction sector. It is evident that vocational education plays a crucial role in preparing students for careers in the technology industry, and experiences like this visit are invaluable in shaping their future aspirations.

Geography Field Trip

Our final fieldtrip of the school year with the year 10s this week saw a wet and windy visit to Dawlish Warren. Students worked through the elements to collect the data they needed to support them in Paper 3 of Summer 2024.

Year 9 HPA

This week, our Year 9 HPA students met to celebrate the end of the year and give presentations on what they have been individually researching. The students have spent the year studying online university courses from universities all over the world and students delivered a variety of fascinating talks ranging from Greek mythology to space exploration.

The winning presentation was given by Ivy Hodgson-Hunt on the topic of of international women’s rights, with Liam Trap’s presentation on exoplanets and Caitlin Cornish’s presentation on media manipulation both highly commended.

Next year, students will be working on producing research articles to be published in our first ever Torquay Academy academic journal. Well done to everyone for a fantastic year.

Chemistry with Mr Gale

Mr Gale’s A-level chemistry class have been making their own aspirin this week, as part of the “What’s in a Medicine?” topic. They have learned that, during medieval times, people realised that the bark of the willow tree had pain-killing properties, and that it was widely used to help during childbirth, for example. However, the active ingredients in willow bark tended to cause stomach bleeding.

The students followed the steps used by chemists in the nineteenth century to extract the key molecule from plant material, and converted it using a range of chemical reactions into aspirin. They had to use various chemistry techniques to make and to purify their aspirin, and they then had to check the purity of their product.

Although the students were not allowed to try their aspirin, as it had not been made to commercial standards, it provided them with a valuable insight to how pharmaceuticals are made industrially.

Another Cycle is coming to a close for 7KVA’s maths intervention group

They’ve worked so well for the last 8 weeks to consolidate and revisit the corner stone concepts of Cycle 3. All the students are feeling more confident and successful in their maths lesson too.
We’ve enjoyed some donuts this morning to celebrate the end of a successful Cycle. Well done 7KVA!
Photographed is Sydney Summers, George Jeffs, Chloe Bayliss, Sanije Hoxha, Imogen Monk, Jaylen Hunter and Theo Beresford. Lucie Bowers, Miley-Jade Grigg, Poppy Fieldhouse, Emily Kenny and Harrison Johnson have also been involved but we’re otherwise occupied for the photo.

Year 5 Activities Days

Over the last fortnight we have had year 5 students visiting Torquay Academy. They experienced life in a secondary school and had taster lessons in Science, PE, Technology and Creative Arts. We look forward to seeing them at Torquay Academy when they join us in year 7.

House News

Our final house competition of the academic year has been a basketball challenge. This has involved teams of twelve students-six boys and six girls -who had to shoot a goal from a designated spot. As always, there was a very healthy competitive spirit and many students who wanted to participate for their house. The heats saw Fawcett, Darwin, Kitson and Christie knocked out -the semi-finals eliminated Brunel and Nearne and once again Pengelly were victorious.

Harrison were looking very strong in the semi-finals ,scoring 8 goals however, in the final, they were beaten 4-2. All students throughout the competition showed tremendous team spirit-cheering each other and shaking hands at the end of the game. This is really what matters most in these events.

Pengelly students were rewarded with some sweet treats and there were small consolation prizes for the Harrison participants.

The Pengelly students, Mrs Lancaster -house captain and Mr Chadwick-head of house celebrated their victory in a particularly jubilant mood. Pengelly have won the last three house events-a feat which has never before been achieved.

Miss Risk.

TA Library

We have recently moved our library area and are particularly pleased with the job our facilities team have done with putting up our sign. Thank you Mark and Paul!

Physics with Year 7

For the last cycle of the year, Miss Foster’s 7Q5 class have been exploring Physics. We started off looking into energy stores and transfers, renewable and non-renewable energy sources and the uses and dangers of radiation. This first half of Cycle 4 included learning lots of new equations including: work done = force x distance, gravitational potential energy = mass x gravitational field strength x height and weight = mass x gravitational field strength.
We then completed our first assessments with Toby Howell scoring an impressive 66%!

For the second half of Cycle 4, we are learning all about forces, including weight, resultant forces, speed and stopping distances and Hooke’s Law. To investigate Hooke’s Law, we completed a practical which looked into the effect of weight (force) on the extension of a spring.

We have had a very full-on and tricky cycle with lots of new equations to learn and theories to understand. Well done 7Q5!

PowerUp

In the last few weeks three students have completed their PowerUp Literacy intervention. In order to do this they have had to work through various levels in the three different subject areas of Word Study, Grammar and Comprehension. This is a massive achievement and will really make a difference in aiding their studies throughout the school. Congratulations to Francesca Skelly (8C), Florence Mills (8K) and Imogen Symonds (8N)

Year 7 Indoor Cricket

This week the mighty year 7 cricket team took on Churston Grammer. With the classic British summer weather returning the boys headed into the sportshall instead of playing on Barton this week. With a switch to pairs indoor rules the boys started well striking the ball cleanly and running with intent between the wickets. Indoor cricket is much faster than its outdoor counterpart and the boys reacted well to the change. Some outstanding shots from Oscar Spurle and Euan Miller saw them take the game to the opposition. Sonny transferrd his table tennis hand eye coordination to his batting smashing the ball beautifully for 6. The run rate was ticking over nicely but stalling slightly in the middle overs due to some very good bowling and some impressive fielding from the Churston boys and girls. Noah Margetts and Jamie Tully showed great game awareness to mix running really hard between the wickets and hitting big shots down the ground for 6. Noah managing four 6’s in total, three coming in one over alone! With a couple of wickets in the final overs TA had reached a mammoth score of 260-5 (both teams start on 100 and its minus 5 for each wicket taken). Now it was our turn to bowl. The boys started really well getting a wicket in the second over and then three in three balls off Lee Stevens over to complete a great hat trick; one bowled, one caught and one run out! A coaches dream! Wickets continued to fall regularly as the Churston players felt the pressure of the huge run chase and with 18 wickets falling in total in their innings the TA boys bowled and fielded supremely well. With Churston finishing on 115 the game was done and dusted. A great TA victory played in good spirits by both teams resulting in a 100% win record for the year 7 cricket team this season. A great performance and experience for the lads, well done.

Team: Zak Haridi, Archie Harman, Lee Stevens, Noah Margetts, Thomas Cox, Sonny Cayford, Noah Kirby, Oscar Spurle, Jamie Tully, Euan Miller.
