New cadets, competition, bouldering and hoping for 20mph
Year 8 Cadet Taster
The CCF Contingent at Torquay Academy now welcomes the Year 8s! A cadet experience evening was provided with over 50 students signing up to take part in the Army and RAF Cadet experience. The existing cadets provided 5 stands for the prospective cadets to take part in a variety of activities. The climbing wall was put to great use with a traverse across the wall navigating through some obstacles. Drill was an eye-opener for some, but everyone got stuck in, which made for some, a great first attempt at drill.
The RAF senior cadets demonstrated the skill of controlling a Drome. Whilst that was going on, another group of students found out how teamwork brings together a group of people to overcome challenges and obstacles.
Meantime in the Platform, the potential cadets were given a demonstration on the Air Rifle and Cadet GP Rifle. Well done, everyone, for taking part and showing interest in what will be an amazing cadet experience.
CCF RAF Section attend Regional CCF Competition
The RAF Section of the CCF sent a team of 12 cadets to compete in the RAF Air Cadets Regional CCF Competition for the first time ever on Sunday 5th February. The drive to Blandford Forum in time for the briefing at 0830 meant a bright and early 5am start. However, there was no snoozing as the cadets completed their last minute preparations for the competition. Over the course of the long day the cadets competed as a full team of 12 in a RAF General Knowledge Quiz and a marching drill sequence and uniform inspection, and then broken down into smaller teams of 4 and 5 for First Aid, Aircraft Recognition and Air Rifle Shooting.
The competition was fierce with 15 other CCF units from schools across the South West vying to represent the Region at the nationals. Given it was our first experience of the competition, it is not a great surprise that we didn’t make the top 3. However, it was a fantastic experience for the cadets and everyone put in 100% effort in to what was a long, tiring but thoroughly enjoyable day.
Bouldering
Students from our rock climbing club have been bouldering this week.
20mph school neighbourhoods could be coming to TA
I have been campaigning for over nine years now for improved road safety for our students. I was very pleased to receive the support of two local councillors Steve Darling (Barton with Watcombe) and Darren Cowell (Shiphay) in lending their support for a 20mph zone around our school. They have taken the idea to the Transport and Parking Working Party and it was agreed to move forward with the plan. A consultation will now begin. I have been very frustrated with the lack of progress with road safety and I am grateful that Steve and darren have listened to my concerns.
English with Miss Pearson
Miss Pearson has been helping 10T8 prepare for their yellow sticker on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s relationship. Students have been working on adding their own ideas to their analysis and expanding their answers. We’ve looked at how the characters subvert Jacobean expectations at the beginning of the play and how Lady Macbeth uses her masculinity to manipulate her husband.
Year 7 Football
Our Year 7 team flew into the next round of the South Devon Cup this week with a 14 – 0 victory over Kingsbridge. A great result for our national quarter finalists.
Brentford trials
We are very proud of Charlie Stevens (Y11) and Will Hall (Y12) who have attended a trial at Premiership Brentford. They have both been performing brilliantly this season and they deserve this great opportunity.
