National Football Success for Year 10 Team Makes History

TA through to the last 8

Year 10 Football Team make Academy History

On Monday of this week I had the privilege of witnessing our Year 10 boys progress into the last 8 of the National Schools Football Cup. It is believed that this is the first time in the schools history that we have reached this stage of the competition. We were drawn away to Crookham College, Hampshire in the last 16 of the competition. The match was played on a small, narrow wet and foggy pitch and in the first half this proved to be a great leveler, the size and physicality of the opposition meant that we only saw glimpses of the flowing football that is the trademark of this team, however we certainly had the lions share of possession in the first half but we were unable to convert that into goals. The second half started in much the same way but we were playing more and more attractive football that was beginning to find gaps in the Crookham defence, as the crowd were starting to talk about extra time and penalties the deadlock was broken. A brave diving header from Cole Harford beat all the players around him to put us ahead, there were still 20 minutes to go so the game was far from over. About 5 minutes later Olly Mason pounced on a poorly defended cross to hammer the ball in the back of the net from 6 feet out to make it 2-0. It was then just a case of dealing with everything they threw at us. Having said that our keeper Josh Nicol only had to make one save in the game. We now wait until Monday to see who we play in the quarter finals.

Football

Year 8

On Monday evening the Y8 football team travelled down the hill to St Cuthbert Mayne for their County Cup last 16 tie.   Missing 5 regular team members through injury or illness; Sam Carroll (Goalkeeper), Archie Farkins, Will Makinson, Brandon Edwards and Spencer Artz, this was always going to be a tricky game.

In a very even and tight affair, TA edged in front after 20 minutes. A fantastic run down the left flank by Ryley Steele, followed by a good effort on goal resulted in a corner. An excellent delivery (one of many!) from Reece Shaw saw Tyler Stuckey (somehow!) nod in from a yard out. The game remained tight throughout the first half, with debutant goalkeeper Nick Turner a spectator as the game was played out largely in the middle of the pitch.

TA started very brightly in the second half and took less than 5 minutes to double the lead. Ryley Steele again causing havoc on the left and his cross/shot deceived everyone and flew into the top of the goal despite the best efforts of the Cuthbert goalkeeper. The game then opened up as Cuthbert threw bodies forward in an attempt to get back into the game. TA had several chances to wrap the game up, but equally Nick Turner had to pull off a brilliant save to keep our noses in front. With 10 minutes remaining, from our own corner Cuthbert hit us on the counter attack and managed to get a goal back. We then had to dig in and work hard to preserve our lead, as Cuthbert came close to an equalizer but we held out.  Final Score: TA win 2-1

Man of the Match: Ryley Steele

Year 11 Football

On Tuesday year 11 travelled to South Dartmoor to in the South Devon Cup. The team started slowly and found themselves one nil down after six minutes. This however woke the team up and ten minutes later they pulled level through Alfie Edwards, Zac Chalmers-Wood made it 2-1 TA five minutes later when his fierce shot from 25 yards flew in to the top corner of the net. The scored stayed the same till half time. Early in the second half TA were caught cold again and South Dartmoor levelled. The game was then end to end with both teams creating chances but not threatening either goal keeper. With just minutes to go Harry Smith pounced on a loose ball in the South Dartmoor box to send TA through to the quarter finals where they will face either Newton Abbot College or Dartmouth College.

Badminton Centre Parcs Tournament KS4

Hot on the heels of our success last week with our younger team, 3 teams of Year 11 headed to Paignton Community and Sports College, in a bid to become Torbay champions and progress to the County Finals. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Plagued by injury and illness, all teams fought valiantly , playing against some schools of very high standards. Our boys A team of Jack Bell, Kieran Bailey, Niccolo Guastella , Jack Lavercombe narrowly missed out on the top spot to Churston Ferrers Grammar School. Well Done to all who played.
