International School Award
Congratulations to our MFL department on being awarded the prestigious International School Award journey. In the assessment, we were told “you have comfortably met the requirements at the Foundation level. It is great to see that you have a long-lasting international programme and have conducted reciprocal activities. You have partnerships already in place and the fact that you have added another language to your foreign language programme will contribute to your students’ awareness…”
UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge
During the most recent lockdown, 200 of our Year 9, 10 and 11 students took part in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. Usually this would be sat in school, but this time students could take part remotely from home.
The results are now in and many of our students received a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate. One group stood out from the crowd: Mr Whelan’s 11T9 class (pictured). Four students qualified for further rounds in the competition: Mya Edralin, Igor Sniegocki, Ellie Mitchell and Anthony Brooking. In fact, Anthony did so well that he qualified for the Maclaurin Olympiad; he is Torquay Academy’s first student to qualify for this round. We are so proud of all of the students who took part. Well done!
Year 10 Leadership Task
The Year 10 cadets carried out a leadership task this week, putting up a military 9×9 canvas tent. The aim of the session was to identify potential leaders/NCOs (Cadet LCpl). Great fun was had by all and a few potential promotions are looming.
A Fantastic Start
The 10th of March was the beginning of a new adventure for the Year 9 Cadets. Some 32 new RAF Cadets Paraded for the first time. Finishing the school day and then forming up in 3 ranks ready for action is in itself, is a tall order.
The initial task was to have all the cadets in Military Uniform by the end of term. We managed to achieve this in two week which is a credit to Cpl Jake Major, our newly appointed Quarter Master in charge of the store.
The Year 9 RAF CCF Cadets are embracing a new and exciting approach to cadet life. Understanding and respecting a military rank structure and taking pride in issued uniform, are key elements to basic discipline within the contingent.
Understanding drill was a bit of a shock to the system to start, but within a few training sessions the cadets are showing great potential.
The Year 10 RAF Cadets have also had a great start. There is a real buzz about the restart of the cadet sessions. Throwing them in at the deep end, we laid down a challenge by way of a leadership task. The aim was to establish a 9 X 9 Military Shelter and provide hot food for 2 RAF Pilots who were resting up prior to their next mission.
It was great to see the teamwork and potential leaders from all of the Year 10 Cadets. They quickly identified splitting the group into two would achieve the task quickly. One group cooking and the other putting up the shelter. A great effort by all of the Year 10 Cadets.
As we move forward in training and as things return to some normality, the training team is always looking for opportunities to have the cadets experience other activities outside of school. Flying, Battle Camps and Adventurous Training to name a few.

Auf Wiedersehen, Fin!
This week we say farewell to Finnegan Jessulat who returns home to Germany after spending a term and a half at Torquay Academy. Studying Music, Music Technology and Photography, Finn’s impact in creative arts cannot be understated in spite of the short time that he spent with us. Finn has recently been collaborating with year 12 vocalist Eloise Simpson to produce an original electronic composition entitled ‘Too Easy’, Listen to the work of these incredibly talented students below, while we wish fond farewell and all the very best for the future to this talented and vibrant individual.

Product Design
A Level and GCSE Product Design students have been getting straight back into practical work! They’ve designed and developed pewter ornaments inspired by the geometric patterns made famous by the Art Deco and Memphis design movements. By combining creativity with computer aided design, laser cut patterns are created around which molten pewter is cast. Part of this project has also included the fabrication of aluminium casting blocks utilising skills in marking out, drilling, countersinking and thread cutting. Students heat the pewter in a crucible with a gas torch to over 200 degrees celsius and then pour the molten liquid metal into carefully assembled moulds. The final outcomes have been stunning, we hope you agree!
Year 11 Food
The atmosphere in Hospitality and Catering this week was spot on as our Year 11 students are preparing for their all-important assignment practical.
Sports Clubs Back Up and Running
This past week has been super busy with our after school clubs, it was great to see so many back playing the sports they love. So far we have clubs back up and running in Football, Basketball, Netball, Table Tennis, Dance and our fitness suite programmes. As teachers and coaches we are also happy to be back delivering these sessions and are now looking forward to potential fixtures after half term.
Expanded year 7 space
We are always looking at ways of improving the spaces for our year groups. This week we opened up the Year 7 dining space and were able to give them access to our Art Garden. They are using this space as a quiet area to sit and spend time with their friends. This leaves the other Year 7 playground as an area for ball games. They also have a tranquil and beautiful space in Charlotte’s Garden.

Our table tennis players continue to be put through their paces during their after-school training.
