Incredible performances at Official opening of the Platform

Listen

The Platform Official Opening

Tuesday evening saw the official opening of The Platform.  Our Chair and Vice Chair of Governors, Vince Flower and Leo Critchlow, cut the red tape to mark its official opening.

We were then treated to 75 minutes of the most amazing music, with performances from students in all year groups.

I am so proud of how well our students performed in front of a packed house of over 300.  This was the first of what will be many incredible events in our amazing state of the art facility.

I hope to be able to share with you the video of the opening in a future week’s blog.

The opening song of the evening was played along to a video showing the construction of the theatre.

Year 8 Responsibilities

This week a number of Year 8 students started their responsibilities. After showing initial interest, 20 students were chosen to support Year 7 in a variety of ways.

Each week, they have been scheduled to work with a Year 7 tutor group to help with line up, equipment checking and reading. They have been assigned break time and lunchtime duties in the Year 7 playground and set up a homework club at lunchtimes.

Not only is this extremely helpful to the Year 7 students and staff, but it will provide a number of opportunities for the Year 8s to develop their character through our KS3 LORIC Programme.

BTEC Dance

BTEC dance is not just about dancing and learning.  They are also being put their paces by Miss Walklin as they improve their endurance!

Any old tech

Our A Level and GCSE Product Design students need to get their hands on some ageing tech to help them with product disassembly tasks and we hope you can help! This is a request for any disused gadgets that might be gathering dust in cupboards, drawers, lofts or garages around your home that you would be willing to donate to the Enterprise learning area.

In particular, we need anything hand held such as:
– remote controls
– cameras
– portable music players
– mobile phones
– games systems

The quirkier and older the better! If you’ve got something to donate, please bring it to C10.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this previously – we are still using your donations although desperately need more!

Motorsport

The school’s very own motorsport team will travel up to Silverstone Circuit this week to take part in the International Greenpower F24 Finals which they have qualified for in their first full season. This is an amazing achievement; 258 cars have competed so far so to be ranked 9th is fantastic, many teams have been competing since the series started some 20 years ago!

Regardless of the result, the team have achieved great things already through hard work, resilience and determination. Watch out for next week’s blog to see just where we finished or you can track the race live on Thursday from 11am on this link; http://www.bbk-online.net/gpt/

Cereal bars

Lessons have many different objectives; some of those aren’t always clear at first look.  This week our Year 7s have been making cereal bars.  In addition to looking at nutrition and baking, our students were learning about the importance of teamwork as they worked collaboratively.

Health & Social Care Trip

Our trip to Hollacombe Community Resource centre was a real eye-opener. It allowed us to see many examples of things we had been learning in our Health and Social care lessons such as person-centred care, personal budgets, adaptations for certain disabilities and much more. Seeing how these things are used in everyday life was extremely useful as it helped us gain a better understanding of how they help to improve people’s quality of life. It personally inspired me to look further into this field of work as I feel like it would be a hard but rewarding career and I hope I can do something similar to this in the future.

Hannah Runs Again!

Hannah spent the weekend 5th/6th October at Bournemouth Marathon Festival, her 5th year competing at this event.  This was her final year as a junior in the 2K race. She ran a BMF PB of 8:42 to finish 23rd female/68th overall. 321 ran.  Hannah is excited to now move up to 5K events, starting with a night run at Haldon Forest later this month.

Team TA Sports Roundup

Post 16 Football Programme

Bridgend were our visitors this week in the ECFA Premier League, the college from Wales have had some close games and we expected them to be tough to break down. We started the game on the front foot and had an opportunity to take the lead in the first 3 minutes but didn’t take the chance when it dropped down at the far post. A few minutes later a ball in the box from Parry fell to Passmore who put it away to put us 1-0 up, we continued to push forward and on 15 minutes a through ball from Harford allowed Passmore to get past his marker and slot home his 2nd of the game. A lack of concentration from us allowed them to pull one back after a misplaced backpass allowed them to intercept and bring the score to 2-1. We made a couple of changes to rest our lads coming back from injury and gave minutes to some players that needed it, straight from the restart Parry raced clear after winning a foot race with their defender to slot home making it 3-1 and just before half time a well taken free kick from Belsten found Pearse in the box to score from 6 yards, halftime we went in 4-1 up

The 2nd half was a tough encounter with some strong tackles going in and some good defending from both sides, on 50 minutes a cross into the box found Tucker at the far post to calmly finish taking the score to 5-1. We then tried to see out the game with good possession and getting the whole squad involved through changes when we could. Bridgend took advantage of a free kick to score near the end but we were still comfortable and finish the game 5-2 winners, keeping us at the top of the table.

Visit of Future Elite Sports

On Thursday we were pleased to have Gregg from future elite sports join us to present to our students some more opportunities and pathways after 6th form. This included options in America and their own programme in Northampton.   Gregg explained to our students the differences between the UK Universities and the American Colleges in detail and opened up their eyes to opportunities that are out there.   He also explained how the process works and what is needed from an education and sporting side to have these options.

Our students asked some great questions and left the presentation with lots to think about, Gregg will also follow up with them in the next few weeks to send over more information to those who want it.

Year 8 too good for Paignton

On Monday the Year 8 football team travelled to Paignton Community College for their first game of the season in round 2 of the National Cup.  TA started the game strongly and took the lead inside the first two minutes when a Will Green header was saved by the Paignton goalkeeper only for him to smash in the rebound. TA dominated the game from here on in playing some very attractive one and two touch football keeping the ball for lengthy spells. Some of the goals scored wouldn’t look out of place on Match of the Day on a Saturday night and would have the pundits drooling over the quality.

Goalscorers on the day – Will Green x2. Josh Thompson x2 Charlie Stevens, Zac Steele and Charlie Pope.  Man of the match – Danny Frankum

Netball

Year 8 and 9 travelled to Newton Abbot on Thursday for a netball match against Newton Abbot College. Both teams performed well on the day and although we didn’t win the girls displayed some great netball despite the rain and the wind. Hopefully, we will be victorious next time we meet them. Players of the match are Milla from the year 9 team and Evie from the year 8 team. Well done girls.

Year 11 Netball

Year 11 had their last netball fixture Monday 7th October. It was a little emotional as these girls had played together religiously for the past 5 years. Their commitment to TA netball club has been exemplary and they are fantastic role models for our younger squads. Well done girls. You are all amazing.
