Effort Boards
The effort boards show students’ average effort grade from their attendance, behaviour and readiness to learn, homework, and mindset for learning. I was particularly pleased to see that this time there is a far greater number of students achieving the top grades, which means more and more students are putting in excellent effort day in, day out.
First Class Effort
Pictured below are the students who have demonstrated First Class Effort during the first teaching cycle of the year. They have achieved the gold standard and I am very proud of their accomplishments because, as Mr Gale says, “the gold standard means your effort across all subjects is exemplary – you have to achieve 1’s for every effort grade in every subject, and have 100% attendance”.

Swimming Success
Year 8 student, Archie Bindon has won Gold at the the annual Torquay Leander Swimming Championships which took place at the end of September. Well done to Archie for this great achievement.
Full STEAM ahead at Eden!
As part of Curriculum Enrichment Week, Year 8 students completed a ‘STEAM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) powered journey around the Eden Project in Cornwall. They used the fantastic range of displays and attractions to look in detail at a number of key topics in the aforementioned subjects.
Students explored the Food Chain in the Mediterranean Biome, covering topics in both Science and Food Technology, and explored the origins of food. A trip to the Core education centre, deepened understanding of biomimicry – where design is inspired by nature. Drawings and macro photographs were taken throughout the day as students captured examples of form, pattern, rhythm and tone to help assist with future work in Art. With temperatures touching thirty degrees (in the middle of November!) in the Rainforest Biome, students undertook an ‘Extreme Maths Challenge’. They had to look carefully at the signs and displays to answer a series of maths questions – all whilst trying not to break into a sweat!
Year 12 Work Experience
As part of their Post-16 curriculum, our Year 12 students underwent work experience last week. The experience helps students develop their vocational and employability skills and allows them to make decisions about their future in terms of career plans. Students attended a wide variety of placements such as in retail, education and hospitality. The week was a huge success, with many gaining fantastic references from their employers and a few even securing a part-time job!

Year 7 Homework Practice
This week saw the whole of Year 7 in the Sports Hall with all heads down engaging in homework practice.
New Year 7 Study Area
We have this week installed a new study area for Year 7 and it has been an instant hit! A number of new tables and seating have been provided for a quiet study area, and students can use it before school, at breaktime, lunchtime or after school. It has been a busy area already, with students keen to complete their Knowledge Organisers and help each other to learn! It is brilliant to see, and typifies the responsibility the Year 7 students are taking for their own learning.
Lexia Raffle Prize Winners
Students completing our Lexia programme to help aid their literacy skills, have been working very hard since the start of term to meet their weekly targets. Every time a student completes a target they earn a raffle ticket to be in with a chance to win a prize at the end of each teaching cycle. Pictured are the two lucky students chosen at random for Cycle 1, Maria Gabl (Year 8) and Cody Bratcher (Year 7). Well done to both of them.

Rugby
A good win away to PCSA at Waterleat Rd. We went a try down which woke us up after getting off the bus cold. We then scored 4 unanswered tries and had really good shape with our pod system working really well with lots of strong drives from the forwards. We looked the better side throughout the game but a couple of weak tackles allowed Paignton to score a couple of tries in the second half with a final score of 20-15 to TA. Well done to the team for a great effort !!
In House Triathlon
On Wednesday, students from year’s 7,8 and 9 participated in TA’s first annual house triathlon. In each year group, 1 boy and 1 girl from each house entered the event that consisted of swimming, cycling and running. The event held was held at Clennon Valley. All the competitors competed with great spirit and sportsmanship. Students pushed themselves to their absolute limits which was great to see. Well done to all who participated.

Year 8
The Year 8 football team showed character, determination and a whole load of resilience to overcome Tiverton on Thursday evening in the County Cup.
In a frantic game of end to end football where we never really settled due to Tiverton’s long ball tactic, we were constantly chasing the game. At half time we were trailing 2-1, but shortly into the second half Reece Shaw sent a free kick sailing in for 2-2. Then came a flurry of TA injuries, with Shaw, Ryley Steel, Archie Farkins and Adam Warner all getting injured in close succession and having to be replaced. This was later followed by Charlie Clarke
We then fell 3-2 behind as once again we failed to deal with a long ball forward. However, some direct play of our own immediately afterwards saw Josh Watt fouled for a penalty. Watt picked himself up and coolly stroked the ball into the corner. Once again we soon fell behind again for 4-3 and with time running out, Will Makinson hit a volley against the crossbar and it seemed our luck was out….Until the ball fell to Makinson 20 yards from goal, in the final seconds of the match and he swiveled to volley the ball, thumping it into the top corner for delirium from the TA players. Extra time then followed with no further goals, but some real gutsy performances from all of the players who were determined to win the game. So to penalties where goalkeeper Sam Carroll became hero, brilliantly saving two Tiverton penalties whilst Will Makinson, Jacob Thomas, Tyler Stuckey and Spencer Artz put theirs away
Final score – TA 4-4 Tiverton (TA win 4-3 on penalties)
MOM – Will Makinson (not just for his worldy strike!) – but a massive squad effort.
