Goal of the Season, climbing wall and a bug box
Goal of the Season!
Ben Hopkins, Year 12, has won the England Colleges FA’s prestigious goal of the season award. You can see his amazing goal below.
Year 7 Design & Technology
I was really impressed with the attention to detail Callie put into her bug box as part of her current Year 7 Design and Technology lessons. She chose her colour scheme well and spent a great detail of time painting in the extra fruit motifs that are sure to entice plenty of bugs!
Year 8 & 9 Hospitality & Catering
The new Year 8 Hospitality and Catering classes have focused well on finding out about careers and businesses within this area in their theory lessons and then for their practical they have focused beautifully on perfecting the skills of baking and presenting a delicious victoria sponge.
The Year 9s have been working on their practical assessment which consisted of baking bread rolls, home made burgers, wedges and coleslaw. Wonderful work again, very impressive!
Year 9 Assembly
Recently all Year 9 students have completed their speaking assessments in GCSE English. This involved them preparing and delivering a talk on a topic of their choice in front of their class.
Kole Gjikolaj in 9C asked if it would be possible to repeat his talk to the whole year group in an assembly. We were delighted to give him the opportunity! He presented a very well-researched and thought-provoking talk on the climate crisis.
Kole’s talk was extremely interesting and witty (especially his impersonation of Donald Trump) and received a very warm round of applause, which was very well-deserved – well done Kole!
CCF
Every week our brilliant CCF undertake all manner of activities. This week they were up on our climbing wall.
Featured House of the Week
In the third instalment of our weekly series, the feature house is Kitson.
The colour for Kitson is green. I have been reliably informed that many Year 6 students were delighted to discover they will be in the house’ with the green tie.’ Today – for those soon to be new students, I will be supplying some key facts about the house so those words can be changed to the proud acknowledgement, ‘I am in Kitson.’
Kitson’s house leader is Mr Bindon who is one of our Vice-Principals; Mr Bindon is an incredibly strong advocate of the house system.
Kitson takes its name from William Kitson (1800-1883) who was a solicitor and entrepreneur during Torquay’s ‘Golden Age’ In fact, William Kitson was of such importance to the local area that he became known as ’The maker of Torquay’. William Kitson realised the potential of Torquay as an attractive holiday resort to wealthy Victorians. The lush climate and mild air being beneficial to the health of those who lived in more densely populated areas of the country. Most of the more affluent areas of Torquay were designed and created by William Kitson. Large parts of The Warberries and Wellswood with their large villas and tree -lined avenues are the result of the vision of William Kitson. A lesser known fact is that William Kitson opened Torquay’s first ever bank.
There is still a Kitson’s solicitors in Torquay today. Based in Orchard Way, they proudly uphold the values of one of Torquay’s greatest benefactors. Kitson’s solicitors is the chief sponsor of The Rowcroft Sleepwalk which is to be held on Saturday 3rd July, thus it is particularly apt that we are featuring Kitson House this week.
The motto for Kitson house is Be Enterprising. We expect all students in Torquay Academy to be enterprising and utilise the opportunities presented to them. An enterprising student might be gifted at any form of design work, be an ambassador on the student council, organise charitable work or participate in a creative project.
Our featured students of the week are Wojcjech Tabaczuk from 7K, Marcus Jenkins from 8K and Francis Breslan from 9K. All three students are this week’s Kitson house stars. Wojcjech relayed how he had made a real effort to organise his equipment so that he had everything ready for school each day. We agreed that he was being resourceful which is of course a synonym for enterprising. Marcus was described by his tutor as ‘outstanding’ having achieved many house points and shining above his peers as Kitson would have done. Francis has recently completed his Speaking and Listening English assessment and was enterprising when researching available resources and formulating them into a polished piece. Once again, all three students have adopted the values of their house.
Year 9 1500m
On Monday and Tuesday this week teh year 9 boys took part in the 1500m in their athletics lessons. The performance from all those who took part was incredible with all showing an unbelievable amount of effort and resilience.
The three fastest times across the year group were incredibly close.
Pierce Gerring ran it in 5-36 and Harry Clarke and Ewan McLachlan both running it in 5-37 with Harry just beating Ewan on the line.
There was an incredible scene of togetherness and team spirit in one lesson that saw the group supporting Aiden Stapleton on his final lap.
This video sums up what TA is all about.
Year 9 Rounders
The Year 9 girls attended a rounders tournament on Wednesday. They all played extremely well, winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2 games. Miss Lewis and the PE department are very proud of you all, well done!
And well done to Freya Davies who received Player of the Tournament.
