Harry Lee in Exeter’s First Team squad
Year 11 student, Harry Lee, was selected as Exeter’s first team substitute keeper for their League 2 game against Crawley on Tuesday night. It is quite remarkable to be on the bench at the age of 15. He has such a talent and will have the brightest of futures in the professional game.
Exeter’s manager, Matt Taylor, said that Harry has “got a huge future ahead of him, he’s an incredible young talent”. We could not agree more!
Year 11
Year 11 have made a phenomenal start back to the year. and are currently busy preparing for their first PPEs which start on Monday 9th November. Since the start of September 15,941 House points have been awarded, which for a year 11 cohort is amazing. Our top boy and girl so far this year are Sean Andrews and Amy Langley with Finley Paull and Charlie Moore very close runners up. We also have 108 students who have shown impeccable behaviour (not receiving a single negative point). Over 220,313 Tassomai questions have been attempted with many students having answered over 3,000 questions. We also have been able to recognise our students of the Half Term awarded by tutors (see picture below). Well done year 11 – we are extremely proud of you!!!
Terrific Tens
Year 11 students have been collecting signatures to complete their terrific ten cards to enter into the end of half term prize draw for the chance to win Amazon vouchers, chocolates and doughnuts. Well done to our winners Sean Andrews, Will Heron, Otto Berdt, Will Flood, Olisi O’Malley and Emma Harrison and good luck to all our year 11s for next half term.
Art trip to Torre Abbey
The new 100 minute lessons now allow us to have the time to take our KS4 & KS5 Art & Photography students out and about on field trips. Last week saw Mrs Lynch and Mr Haring take their Year 10 BTEC class to Torre Abbey for a drawing and photography session. All work is linked to their current art project ‘Hybrids’
Bandanas were bought along in case students did have face masks, four of our girls decided to make a fashion statement out of them instead! The students were fantastic and managed to achieve some outstanding work.

Mathematics Olympiad for Girls
This half term, four girls from our new A-Level maths cohort took part in the UKMT Mathematics Olympiad for Girls. This national competition is designed to promote mathematical thinking and encourage more girls into studying or pursuing a career in maths.
A huge well done to Anna Hobson, Charlotte Denning, Courtney Rogers and Jasmine Willcocks who are all pictured with their certificates after successfully participating in the competition. This is just the start of an exciting journey in maths for these girls!
Working out whilst in self-isolation!
Gregg Hindom in Year 7 shared a video with me of him ensuring he is keeping up his fitness levels ensuring he is ready for Football Academy training after half term!
Fabulous Fundraiser
One of our lovely Year 13 students, Sky Gardiner, has ‘braved the shave’ in order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Such an incredibly selfless act which has raised over £400 so far!
Year 7 Equestrian Success
Congratulations to Dolce Zulhayir, Year 7 who took part in her first equestrian event of the year, which took place in Chard at the weekend, riding a new horse and finishing an excellent 2nd place in her first competition and 3rd in her second competition. We look forward to sharing more success as the season unfolds. Well done Dolce!
Mountain Biking
The last ride of the year saw the students braving some very wet trails for another ride and some coaching from former student and @wideopenmag and @nukeproofbikes ride Natasha Bradley (seen in the video chasing down Jimmy Macleod from 7N). They had a great ride and now have to wait for the evenings to get lighter so we can start again and visit some more venues. Thanks to Mr Butler who volunteered to drive the mini-bus to get Mr Wheelan and the students to Haldon Forest and back again. Follow @OutdooredTA on twitter to find out when they’re starting up again.
Pudding Club
Pudding Club has proven to be a very popular extracurricular activity with the year sevens at here at TA. Each student has shown nothing but enthusiasm for the subject creating a variety of scrumptious puddings including apple crumbles and classic Victoria sponges.
Thank you so much to Mrs Haines and the first Pudding Cub.
Food Technology
It has been a fantastic first half term in Food Technology. They have been so busy creating and producing lovely dishes and here are some of the highlights.
The year 7s favourite dish was cheese and bacon scones, the year 9s loved the chicken stir fry, year 10s chicken burritos and year 11s was pasties.
Well done also to year 11 for focusing on the theory aspect of the Catering and Hospitality.
TA Dictionaries being used in Maths!
Students are making excellent use of their TA Dictionaries in maths this year. They have been adapted to include images to help illustrate the key concepts which students are finding really useful.
Outstanding Golfing
Congratulations to Mrs Beckett who was the winner of the Sheila Piper Trophy at Churston Golf Club this week.
Year 11 Dance
The girls put Miss Walklin through her paces this week in a dance they choreographed.

Year 11 – Fun Friday!
Doughnut delight with both edible doughnuts and Mr Webber dressed as a giant doughnut…
Studying nursing at university
It is always a real privilege to send our students off to University, equipped with the skills and experience they need for the next phase of their life. Equally pleasurable to hear from them and find out how they’ve settled in. Annie Mills, a former pupil who undertook the Level 3 Triple Award (11 coursework and 6 exam units over 2 years) and was awarded a fabulous Distinction * Distinction * Distinction has described her experiences so far:
2020 has been a strange, tough, but rewarding year for me. I’ve had my lows and my highs but the biggest highlight began when I got that first email, confirming that I had been accepted into the University of Exeter to study Nursing. This course is relatively new as this year is the second year in which it has been up and running.
Expectations of university life have changed significantly due to this pandemic as I found myself at parties for the first few nights then new guidelines came in to play. However, that hasn’t stopped me from pursuing my dream to become a nurse and to hopefully specialise in dementia care, care of the elderly or even palliative care. In my honest opinion, it has been more difficult than I first thought when it comes to settling into university as lectures are all online along with seminars and problem-based learning sessions. It has, however, been such a confidence booster to be able to meet so many new people and be able to talk about anything and everything within our sessions together.
On Tuesday’s we have clinical skills which is where we practise basic skills at Heavitree Hospital, in real-life hospital settings. So far into the course, I have learnt how to apply bandages to the basic joints, (the knees, ankles and wrist); hand hygiene procedures that are undertaken within NHS environments; Basic life support, including CPR and defibrillation.
Due to the pandemic, these sessions have been quite full-on when it comes to PPE but the content that is taught is very informative and very enjoyable to put into practice. The PPE that is required to be worn are face masks, visors and all of our belongings are put into sterilised plastic bags to prevent the risk of spreading the virus. We are required to wear aprons and gloves as well as face masks and visors when in clinical skills. It has proven to be difficult, however, during the short time I have been here, I have found that University is truly where I want to be even through this difficult time.
Post 16 girls play their first game
On Wednesday our girls played their first game together against South Devon College. It was a proud moment to see all the hard work and effort that has gone into growing the girls’ programme all come together. The match was fantastic with 16 goals between the two teams, the ability on show from both teams was great and we are now looking forward to our league starting after half term.
Boys final pre season game vs South Devon
We finished our pre-season programme with a very competitive game against South Devon College at Coach Road. The game, as always, was a good contest and gave us another chance to look at players and formations before the big league kick off in November. The boys didn’t disappoint either, showing a fantastic footballing display and a wonder goal by Ben Hopkins (see video above) we have had time to gel in training every day and I’m very confident in this group of players that we will do well again this year if they all keep working hard and take onboard the information they are given. Exciting times ahead again, let’s just hope the league starts without any issues.
The joys of a downpour…..
There was a great start to Wednesday morning for Mr Hogg trying to get into our kit store before the football matches on Wednesday A couple of bin liners later and a crowd of girls laughing at his expense, he finally managed to collect the kit!

Sparx Leaderboards
Tassomai Leaderboards
Since the start of the academic year, a staggering 1.37 million questions have been answered by our incredible TA students. With each daily login, a student receives a bespoke set of questions based on their strengths and weaknesses. Every single question answered will nudge each student closer to a more complete understanding of the topic in each of their subjects. It is mind boggling to think of the collective gains our students have benefitted from as a result of investing so much of their own time and effort into Tassomai.
Thank you to all the teachers, year teams, support staff and parents that have contributed to this amazing start that our students have made to Tassomai this year!
