Cadet Contingent

It was a busy week for the cadet contingent.  Flights with the RAF are being organised for some of the RAF cadets.  Final preparations are being made for the Summer Camp in Windermere for a week.  A buzz around the cadets as they are all looking forward to hill walking, Kayaking, mountain biking, climbing and gyhill walking.

The RAF cadets enjoyed Drill and learning first aid.  Both skills relied on discipline which all displayed.  The cadets are working through a St Johns First Aid syllabus.

The Army cadets had their first parade in newly issued uniforms.  The cadet training session covered how to look, wear and take care of military uniforms.  Boot polishing, ironing and general upkeep of the kit was the order for the lesson.

It was fantastic to see so many cadets in uniform and being proud to wear it.  They are also working hard towards gaining a cadet badge in completing the Communication Information System (CIS) training.  The cadets are learning the NATO Phonetic Alphabet which assigns code words to each of the 26 letters of the alphabet and is used for international radio communication worldwide.  It was great to see the cadets embracing the ‘buddy, buddy’ system in helping each look and maintain looking smart.  A proven system that keeps a standard.

We look forward to the next few weeks where Drill, uniform and fun will be the main focus.

Enterprise

It was wonderful to see so many exciting lessons taking place in Enterpise this week.

Beautiful Photography

Grace Hallet is completing her year 12 A Level Photography course and has just produced an amazing collection of photographs based on dance and movement for her A Level coursework.

The dancer and model, Year 11 Kezia Stanley, has been dancing for an incredible 13 years and performed some of her beautiful ballet routines for Grace in the drama studio last Friday.

The resulting images are fascinating and explore a number of different approaches and techniques, including slow shutter speed. We look forward to seeing more fantastic work from Grace in year 13

KS4 Drama

KS4 Drama students have been making the most out of our newly refurbished drama studio and state of the art lighting in practical lessons over the last two weeks. Miss Wheeler has expressed how delighted she has been with the engagement from both year 9s and 10s who have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into their performance and cannot wait to take over in drama next year.

Year 7 English

Mr Crow’s class have recently been studying the poem To Autumn by celebrated Romantic poet John Keats.

They began by revisiting some of the central Romantic themes they have encountered during this cycle, such as the sublimity of nature, the brevity of life and their belief in the need for corrupt systems to be radically changed through revolution.

The class then listened to an exposition on the life of John Keats which focused on his medical background, his failed pursuit of a literary career, his care for his tubercular brother, his own contracting of tuberculosis, and his eventual death aged 25 in Rome as a consequence of his illness.

This was then used to inform the class discussion that placed the poem, which was published months before his death, in the context of a man who had faced a life of losing those he loved too soon. Their starting point as they read the poem was therefore to consider the message of beauty’s inevitable decline and the feeling of time running out.

This resulted in some incredibly rich discussion of the poem and its language, culminating in an annotated poem guided by class commentaries and analysis.

They then condensed this analysis into our class writing focus of writing developed opening statements for our written interpretations. They have been working on including:

This was used to inform their opening statements with a big focus being placed on the use of the word ‘reflecting’ as a way of introducing relevant contextual knowledge.

They concluded the lesson by sharing a number of these under the visualizer to discuss successes and next steps.

Congratulations to Harry for winning our 7Q7 pose like Keats competition.

Hospitality and Catering

Students in Hospitality and Catering years nine and ten have been making some delicious tear and share garlic bread with homemade salsa and garnish. Not only was the focus in the bread-making process but also in the presentation and making it appeal to the customer/ target audience.

House News

Our final house competition of the academic year is well underway with the Year 7 students once again competing for the House Cup. On this occasion, we are holding a Blockbusters Tournament. Blockbusters, which many may remember with some affection, was a very popular teatime show during the late eighties and early nineties. Our Year 7 students had (unsurprisingly) never heard of the concept.

The Torquay Academy version of the game consists of a boy and a girl from each house group attempting to block out their progress across a board; diagonally, horizontally or vertically. The opposing team have to block their way whilst forging their own line.  As always, a draw was made (under the watchful eye of Mr Roberts) to decide who would play in each heat.

At the time of writing Brunel knocked out Pengelly, Christie Knocked out Darwin and Kitson knocked out Harrison –(Nearne and Fawcett are yet to play).  Semi-finals and the grand final will take place next week. With individual prizes for the winners and the whole house group.

Year 10 Business

Mrs Thorne’s Year 10 Business classes have been learning about “putting business ideas into practice” over the last few lessons. The content covers all the financial measurements essential to understanding profit and loss, and tools used by businesses to model potential outcomes such as, breakeven, margin of safety and cash flow. They have also studied the finance that is available to businesses for start-up or growth.

How a business finances its activities, was a particular focus in this lesson, drilling down into the appropriate method for the appropriate context. Use of theory in context is an important skill for students who want to be successful in business and as a result we spend more time preparing a plan for an answer than it would ordinarily take to write.

For a nine mark answer the students need to show knowledge and understanding of theory, which they then apply and analyse in relation to the case study. The workbooks follow the same pattern for each different exam question, with the expectation that the students will firstly choose three positive impacts. Once these have been discussed in the group the students go on to read the case study and find the context to pair with the theory. This process is shown in the images attached.

With balance in mind, the students will look for a drawback to their chosen means of finance followed by any external factor that might influence the decision making of the company such as economic downturn, high inflation or competitor behaviour. These elements will also be analysed in context. At every stage students get to put their ideas forward and the merits of these are discussed by students. As a result the students are becoming extremely adept in the formulation of exemplary exam answers mainly due to their hard working and positive attitude to the process. This will hopefully translate to very positive outcomes for them all in summer next year.

Word millionaire

Congratulations to Harrison Harkin in 7F for becoming a Word Millionaire. Harrison has accumulated an impressive 1,008,826 words! Harrison has shown how hard work pays off; every time a student passes an Accelerated Reader book quiz they earn words and Harrison has quizzed on an amazing 39 books this year. Well done Harrison!

Year 7 Rounders CVL

On Monday, eleven Year 7 students attended a Rounders Tournament held at Churston Ferrers Grammar School. The team faced eight other local schools, and it was a fantastic opportunity to put the skills they have been working on in lessons to the test. The team played brilliantly, and got stronger and stronger as the afternoon went on. There were some very close games, and the team ended up coming 7th overall. Well done to all the players (Halle Wotton, Larna Waller, Ashleigh Evans, Chloe German, Ellie Farthing, Gracie-May Tolley, Sienna Painter, Phoebe Smith, Freya Coatesworth, Eden Nelson-Minns, Grace Green). School Games Tennis Skills Festival

On Wednesday, Maisy Green, Elise Pile and Tammy Westacott went across to Torquay Tennis Club to assist with a Primary school tennis skills festival. The girls had to deliver a specific tennis skills practice to various children from a number of local primary schools. They did a fantastic job of delivering, fun, engaging sessions and really helped the children improve their skills. As the day progressed, they grew in confidence and would have learnt a lot of from this experience.

Turin football trip

Albie Baker and Charlie Green in Year 8 travelled to Turin to play in the Juventus World Cup.  They played against Juventus teams from around the world, Albie was top goal scorer for the U13s and they went all the way through to the final, unfortunately, they lost 3-0 against Argentina. Juventus Devon received the fair play trophy shows demonstrates respect and professionalism. Well done Albie and Charlie!

Jazz Excels in Beach Soccer Tournament

Jazz travelled to Croyde on Saturday 18 June, to play Beach Soccer in a tournament. She experienced wind and rain but there were lots of smiley faces and great fun. Two England and European champion beach soccer players were there and joined in and assisted with the presentation too; one of them also plays for Team GB and is a silver medalist. Everyone was awarded a medal for participation and Jazz’s team won so were given a second medal. Jazz got plenty of autographs as well! Winners were also given a t-shirt and the trophy was awarded to Jazz for her amazing performance and scoring a hat-trick in the first game and then 1 in the second game. Well done, Jazz!
