Electric cars, performing arts, ice pops and the limbo

Listen

Greenpower success

On Sunday morning the school’s in house motorsport team headed off from school at 5am to compete in a covid friendly set of Greenpower races at Castle Combe racing circuit.  After a sudden end to any ongoing modifications back in March the team worked tirelessly through the week preparing our cars, Bindon and Pugh, for the new style sprint races.  After sailing through scrutineering both cars got in some valuable practise laps without any drama.  However, a few competitors were showing some worrying pace so the decision was taken to alter the gearing to give more speed but less stamina before the first race.  The gamble paid off resulting in a win for Bindon and a second place for Pugh in race 1.

After a rapid sanitisation break and driver change race 2 ended with another 1-2 for team TA!  However, after the race had ended another car failed to obey the Marshall’s flags and collided with the back of Pugh resulting in the driver requiring medical attention and Pugh unable to participate in the 3rd race.  To complete our down-turn in fortunes Bindon suffered a puncture so limped out of the race 3.  Onto race 4, this time Pugh reaped the reward of stamina and outpaced the rest of the field, winning the race but Bindon fell away, short on energy.

A great result in all meant we had won 3 of the 4 races, posted the fastest lap and won the points table for the event.  A real accolade for the team who are now busy preparing for their next race at Goodwood in October.

Limbo and ice pops – a perfect Fun Friday!

Another week and another great Fun Friday.  The Year 7s got to show off their limbo skills – you can see these in the video below.

Ice pops were the treat for all of the amazing hard work that our Year 8s and 9s have been doing this week.  Have a lovely weekend!

Rolling numbers

We use rolling numbers to help students embed their times tables.  They are fun and loud, but they make a big difference!  Here you can see them rolling their 6s and 7s.

Performing Arts Academy

It has been so lovely seeing our Performing Arts Academy take off again this week.  After the disappointment of not being able to perform Aladdin in April this year, Charlotte, Jodie and Eve have started the year with more enthusiasm than ever!

Auditions have been held on Tuesday and Thursday this week and have been attended by record numbers of students.

Year 7 Sport

The sporting life of our year 7s got off to a flying start with well over half the year groups participating in extra curricular clubs.  Netball and football took place outside and a wide range of sports took place in the sports hall.  It is wonderful to see so many students taking advantage of all of the opportunities that TA has to offer.

After school Sports clubs

In addition to the Year 7 offer on Tuesdays, Year 8 were offered a wide range of sports on Monday and Year 9 followed suit on Wednesday. Sports on offer included Netball, Dance, Table Tennis, Cricket, Football and basketball. We hope to keep the same provision going until at least Christmas when we will change the sports on offer. As in previous years after school clubs are open to anyone to attend and are free of charge. It would be great to see more and more students take advantage of this fantastic provision.

Year 7 Homework club

Every night after school we run homework club from 3 – 4 pm. The students are able to complete the their homework with a member of staff on hand to help them with any issues.

Airtrooper Ollie reports for duty

Ollie Mellitt has swapped her TA uniform for a British Army one having passed out as a soldier in recent days. Ollie completed her studies at TA last year and went on to undertake her basic training at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. The College is renowned for providing the Army with its future leaders.

Ollie developed an interest in a military career through her involvement with TA’s cadet force, and learned a huge amount about grit and resilience when completing 35 and 45 mile Ten Tors challenges with the school team. She was able to approach and pass her infantry exercises with confidence having got used to the rigours of navigating and roughing-it on Dartmoor.

She is in no doubt that these experiences, together with the discipline of earning a great set of academic results here, helped get her through an extremely tough selection and training process. She now joins her chosen regiment, the Army Air Corps, where she will initially train as helicopter ground crew ensuring the readiness of the Army’s fleet of rotary attack aircraft.

She is hoping to be deployed overseas in the future, as well as get the opportunity to train for air crew roles, although she’s currently enjoying a few days of well-earned leave at home!

Athletics update – Hannah Carr

On Sunday Hannah travelled to North Devon AC for the 2nd Devon Open track & field meet. A surprisingly hot day didn’t stop Hannah racing to two sprint PBs in 100m & 200m. She also threw well in the 3kg shot put event, can you spot the shot in the pic? Hannah is now hoping for a possible Night Run series, X Country & Sports hall events but most of all the restart of Parkrun!
