Devon champions, drama, effort boards and lots of food
Drama
This week I saw our very talented Year 9s rehearsing the play Bouncers, by John Godber It is a play about Lucky Eric, Judd, Les and Ralph who describe themselves as the original men in black as they tell the tale of one night in a Yorkshire disco in the 80’s. I look forward to seeing the finished performances.
New effort boards
Updated effort boards were displayed around the school this week. We are very proud of our students’ efforts.
Year 11 Mock Practical – Hospitality & Catering
The yr 11s on Hospitality and Catering have done us all proud. The levels of focus and concentration on completing their creations was so impressive. They thought carefully about every aspect in the production of their meals from hygiene and knife skills to the aesthetic appeal in the presentation . Massive well done to each of them ! Here are just some of the many highlights …..
Sparx News
TA has been awarded with a Gold Level ‘Sparx Super Star Award’ in the category of ‘Highest Achiever’ for being in the top 5 schools in the world for ‘average on-time compulsory completion’ over our best 9 weeks of the Autumn Term. Congratulations to our students for their consistent effort with online maths homework!
History in the Classroom with Mr Davis
Year 8 have been studying 20th Century conflict in History. In one of their lessons this week, they focused on the nuclear attacks on Japan by the United States of America. Students learnt about the impacts of the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and discussed if it was proportionate to have used such powerful weapons – even against an enemy. Daniel Eales and Noah Butler produced excellent answers discussing and evaluating this dilemma.
Mini mountain bike
We are very fortunate that one of our maths lead practitioners, Mr Whelan, is also something of a mountain bike expert and qualified coach. Over recent weekends, Mr Whelan has been building a bespoke mountain bike to ensure even our smallest of students are able to safely take part in our mountain bike sessions.
Year 11 Revision Day
On Tuesday the Year 11s had a session led by Miss Cape and Mr Pugh on how to best prepare for their Pre Public Exams (PPEs).
This week on Tuesday our year 11 students took part in a revision day. The aim of the day was to ensure our students have the tools to revise effectively so they can be successful in their exams. Miss Cape, Mr Pugh and I each demonstrated a different way of revising. Students were also provided with any resources that they need to support their revision. The students engaged well and the stockpile of flashcards is already depleting! Year 11 and 13 students have their final practice pre public exams over the next two weeks so work at home preparing for these is vital
Year 7 Maths with Mr Brett
A Year 7 Maths lesson with the students studying the Maths mastery curriculum. Today the topic was angles and after some practice estimating and measuring angles we moved on to drawing angles with a protractor.
House Charity Assemblies
Over the past week, our eight house leads have held a series of special house charity assemblies. The charity for each house is as follows:
Brunel – The Children’s Society
Christie – Rowcroft Hospice
Darwin – Animals in Distress
Fawcett – The Premature Baby Unit
Harrison – The Royal British Legion
Kitson – Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust
Nearne – The Red Cross
Pengelly – Stroke Support
Students are already familiar with their local house charity but this week gave an ideal opportunity to expand on the work each charity performs, the services each provides and the relevance each has to its designated house. The assemblies were received with real enthusiasm by the students who appreciate that each charity is local and relevant to the people of Torbay. I have already spoken to representatives of all our charities and they are unanimously happy to have our young people on board. Our fundraising started with a non-uniform day in October and will continue with the Year 7 Spring Fayre.
Fun Friday!
This week’s Fun Friday was “Water-Pong”. Students had their eyes on the prize, the aim was to get the ball in the bucket.

Following the introduction of our new year 9 literacy support program, Reading Plus, we already have our first students celebrating success.

Year 10 Football vs Teign College
Year 10 through to Quarter Finals. On Tuesday the year 10 team took on Colyton Grammar School in the Devon Cup. Colyton were county finalists in year 7 but were totally outclassed by TA.
TA dominated from start to finish and really should have been a goal up in the first ten seconds. TA played some lovely football but missed numerous chances before taking the lead through Will Green on 15 minutes. It was soon 2-0 when Josh Thompson scored direct from a corner. Then the goal of the game five minutes later when Zac Rowland-Steele scored a Scorpion kick.
The second half continued just like the first with Cole Shobbrook making it 4-0 straight after half time scoring with his first touch.
TA will now wait to see who they play in the next round.
Player Names: Will Hemus, Tommy Aldous, Harry Clarke, Danny Frankum, Charlie Pope, Josh Thompson, Reef Beer, Charlie Stevens, Jack Alcock, Will Green, Zac Rowland-Steele, Evan Kinghorn, Harrison Shaw, Vinny Poynton, Lucas Washbrook, Owen Woodcock, Cole Shobbrooke
