Amazing new students and an amazing new theatre
The Platform
It is amazing! We are blessed to have a theatre that is genuinely as good as it gets. It seats 310 and is equipped with the highest quality light and sound system possible. I cannot wait to see our students perform in this inspiring space.
Also in the building are two dance/fitness studios and three classrooms.
Welcome to our new Year 7s
I was delighted to welcome our new Years 7s to school on Wednesday. They have made an exceptionally good first impression with myself and the rest of the staff. Their first day was focused on learning their way around the school and beginning to understand our expectations of them for the next seven years – which I told them would fly by!
Year 12 return
Mrs Hosking, our Head of 6th Form, and Vice Principal Mr Bindon welcomed our new Year 12s to the school on Wednesday as well. I was pleased to see so many of our successful students return to start studying their A levels.
TA Way
We start each year with our TA Way day which reminds students of the expectations of the school and is set up to support their learning for the coming year. Students had five different sessions that focused upon:
- Celebration and Rewards
- Homework
- Routines and Habits
- Respect, Courtesy and STEPS
- Learn Like a Champion
Assembly
We started Friday morning with a whole school assembly. It is lovely to get the whole school community together and set out our goals for the year ahead.
Climbing wall training
A number of our staff have now received their training that will enable us to make full use of the climbing wall. It is incredible and I look forward to seeing our students using it.
The Launch of the Torquay Academy Combined Cadet Force RAF section.
On Friday 13th September the CCF will be launched to our Year 9 students. They will be invited to a launch event which will include a range of different activities. This will take place during school when they will hear from the Army, Navy, RAF and the Royal Marines about some of the career opportunities. The students will find out about the amazing opportunities offered by the RAF cadets at Torquay Academy. All other students will be given a chance to visit the services stands and talk to a careers specialist.
To help us explain the career opportunities, we have invited all the armed forces to attend with their careers teams to talk to our students. They talk about a wide range of careers and understand that most of their audience will not be signing up to a service but might pursue that career in a civilian capacity. They will remain in school for about 45 minutes after school if you would like to visit them with your children. Please can I say that we are not becoming a recruiting organisation for any of the forces but we are here to maximise the wide ranging and excited activities that come with a Cadet force. It will really push the boundaries of what we can offer, and over time, the numbers we can offer it to.
In the evening there will be a parents evening to elaborate on the activities on offer, including flying and allow the sign up process to begin. Yr9 parents will receive a letter early next week formally inviting them to the event along with timings. The photo shows one of our NCO’s just after his first flight having taken control of the aircraft.
