Summerfest 2025

On Friday, the sun shone brightly over Torquay Academy as our entire school community came together to celebrate Summerfest 2025, a festival organised entirely by our dedicated Year 12 Music and Music Technology students. Months of planning and teamwork culminated in an unforgettable afternoon of music, creativity, and community spirit.

This year’s festival saw students from all year groups take to our main stage, treating the crowd to a wide range of performances. Notable highlights included fantastic sets from our Junior Music Academy, as well as our talented Year 9 and 10 music students. It was particularly special to welcome back several Year 11 students, who returned to perform one last time before beginning their Sixth Form journey with us in September. Of course, our brilliant Year 12 organisers also stepped into the spotlight with an energetic set of their own, showing exactly why they were the perfect team to bring Summerfest to life.

Away from the main stage, the Session Stage returned, providing a more intimate setting for acoustic performances and an open mic. This space once again showcased some incredible emerging talent, with a fluid line-up providing every student in the school the opportunity to showcase their talent with a space that kept audiences captivated all afternoon.

For those ready to dance, the Rave Cave delivered a high-energy celebration of electronic music. DJs Dylan Nock and Bodhi Williams took charge of the decks, creating a festival atmosphere complete with stunning audio visuals and a laser show, a true highlight for dance music fans. This year the Rave Cave was opened with a specially choreographed dance from our talented year 9 dancers making Summerfest truly an exhibition across the creative arts.

In addition to music programme. Our Art students contributed with an exhibition featuring submissions from all year groups. Pieces were voted on by students with the winner taking home the coveted Arti Award a fantastic celebration of artistic talent at Torquay Academy.

No festival is complete without food, fun, and games, and student leaders and staff volunteers pulled out all the stops. From delicious pizza and BBQ, to sweet treats, drinks, and ice cream, there was something for everyone. Festival goers also enjoyed stalls such as Sponge the Teacher, glitter and face paint, festival merchandise, and classic games in our relaxation zone. A huge thank you goes to our PE staff for opening up the Astro Turf, giving students a chance to enjoy ball games and sports in the sunshine.

Events like Summerfest remind us what a vibrant, supportive, and creative community we have here at Torquay Academy. We’re so proud of our students not only for their incredible performances, but for their leadership, teamwork, and dedication in making this event such a huge success. It was the perfect way to celebrate all their hard work this year, ahead of next week’s sports day and end-of-term activities.

A massive thank you to every student, member of staff, volunteer, and audience member who made Summerfest 2025 a day to remember. Here’s to next year.

Our Summerfest committee 2025: Henry McManus, Oliver Boyce, Luca Cronje, Jack Butcher, James Lovell, Dylan Nock, Aspen Keenan and Jayden Langhorn.

Student Artwork Selected for Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art

We are thrilled to announce that two of our incredibly talented students have been selected from over 23,000 entries to have their work exhibited at the prestigious Royal Academy of Art in London as part of the annual Young Artists' Summer Show.

Year 7 student Gabriele Stadalninkaite captured hearts with her whimsical oil pastel piece titled "Muffin Da Fluffin", a vibrant and expressive study of her beloved cat. The artwork showcases not only her technical skill but also a wonderful sense of character and imagination.

Year 13 student Coral Rogers was selected for her thought-provoking ceramic sculpture "Entangled in Waste", a striking representation of an octopus ensnared in marine debris. Her work draws attention to environmental issues and the impact of pollution on marine life. Coral’s piece received further recognition when it was awarded the ‘Most Inspiring’ prize by renowned Royal Academician Cathie Pilkington RA, who praised Coral’s vision and creative voice. She will receive a £50 art materials voucher and the school will receive a £250 voucher!

We are incredibly proud of both Gabriele and Coral for this outstanding achievement. Their work will be exhibited alongside the country’s most promising young artists — a testament to their dedication, creativity, and passion.
The Young Artists’ Summer Show is open to the public at the Royal Academy until 11 August 2025, and we encourage all parents, families, and friends to visit and celebrate the incredible achievements of these young artists. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see the creativity and passion of the next generation — and to take pride in the extraordinary talent within our own school community.

Congratulations to Gabriele and Coral!

Torquay Academy Cadets Take on Army Camp at Okehampton - An unforgettable week of challenge, camaraderie, and adventure

A determined group of Torquay Academy cadets travelled to Okehampton Camp for what turned out to be an action-packed, skill-building, and unforgettable Army Cadet experience. Over 300 cadets took part from all schools around the south.

Sunday – Settling In

The cadets arrived on Sunday, eager and a little apprehensive about the week ahead. Once kit was squared away and boots were stowed, it was time to settle down for a good night’s sleep, rest that would definitely be needed.

Monday – In-Camp Competition Begins

The week kicked off with a packed day of in camp activities, all feeding into a week-long competition. Cadets rotated through air rifle target shooting, paintballing, field gun trials, command tasks, and archery. Skills were tested, teamwork was forged, and rivalries (friendly of course!) began to build. Spirits were high and competitiveness even higher.

Tuesday – Range Day at Trigantle Fort

Tuesday saw the cadets head out to Trigantle Fort for a live firing day on the L98 A2 rifle. A first-time experience for many. Under expert supervision, cadets showed impressive control and concentration, with the best shots being recorded for the ongoing competition leaderboard. After returning to camp, cadets prepped themselves for what lay ahead: a 36-hour field training exercise.

Wednesday – Deploy, Build, Train

An early start and swift deployment saw the cadets arrive at the training area, where they established a harbour area and constructed their two-person shelters beneath a starry sky. The weather, fortunately, was kind. Once shelters were set, it was time for intensive fieldcraft training, culminating in a full TIBA assault scenario that evening. Dinner came courtesy of ration packs, and for many, it was their first taste of field cooking, but the cadets rose to the challenge, rustling up impressive meals in true military style.

Thursday – Stealth, Strategy, and a Final Assault

With the sun barely risen, cadets fuelled up on breakfast before heading into further training. A standout activity for many was the stalk – a test of stealth and patience where cadets had to get as close as possible to an “enemy” location without being spotted. The final phase of the exercise involved a full assault on a mock village occupied by enemy forces – adrenaline, tactics, and teamwork brought everything they’d learnt into play. Returning to camp, tired but exhilarated, cadets began preparing for their final day.

Friday – The Grand Competition

The final day saw all training put to the test in a multi-stand competition. Our cadets showcased the grit and skills they’d developed over the week – and brought home some fantastic results:

🏹 Archery – Over all Team-  2nd Place

🧠 Command Task Over all Team – 2nd Place

⚡ Fastest Magazine Filler – Cpl Kelsey Drew

🎯 Air Rifle – 2nd Place individual - Cpl Kelsey Drew

🔫 L98 A2 Rifle – 2nd Place Over all Cpl Owen Ingram

📚 Army Knowledge – Over all 3rd Place

This was more than just a camp. It was a chance for personal growth, skill development, and friendships forged under the pressure of challenge. Every cadet walked away with new confidence, a deeper sense of teamwork, and stories they’ll be telling for years.

Well done to all our cadets – you did yourselves and Torquay Academy CCF proud!

Year 7 Celebration Evening

Miss Main had the pleasure of introducing our Year 7 Celebration Evening – and what a wonderful year it has been for our newest students. From their very first day, this cohort have thrown themselves into every opportunity, becoming a vibrant and enthusiastic part of school life. Miss Main remarked that this might be the most successful start to secondary school that she has ever seen. Their attitude, effort, and achievements have set a brilliant foundation for the years ahead, and we couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve already accomplished.

cooking

Our Year 12 Health and Social Care students had to teach each other how to make cupcakes this week.  They took on the role of teacher and students.  The results looked and were very tasty!

Construction Year 9 Bricklaying – Learning the Basics in the Summer Sun

Year 9 students have been taking full advantage of the warm weather by heading outside to the construction area for some hands-on learning. Over the summer term, they’ve been getting to grips with the basics of bricklaying—building small pyramid sections, then corners leading to pillars and cavity walls.

They’ve learned how to set up a tidy working area, work safely, how to mix mortar using the right ratios, and how to spread it with a trowel to create a smooth, wave-like furrow. Students also practised buttering bricks, checking levels, and trying out different pointing finishes using specialist tools. Some need to practice a bit more, can you spot the mistake?

And, just as important as the building work, they finished off by learning how to clean tools properly and leave the area neat and tidy—just like on a real site.

Great teamwork, great effort, and a brilliant session in the sun!

maths with miss clarke

Miss Clarke’s Year 7 maths class have been diving into a brand new algebraic skill — expanding brackets — and they’re smashing it!

Over the past week, students have been learning how to simplify expressions like 3(x + 4) and 2(a – 5), building their understanding of multiplication, distribution, and algebraic notation. At first, there were a few unsure faces, but with plenty of practice, hard work, and a deeper understanding they have got it - they should be so proud.

They have even developed this skill to go on and complete more complex algebraic calculations as they have beautifully shown on their whiteboards.  Well done, Year 7 — keep up the brilliant work!

Food tech with Mr chadwick

It has been an amazing year in the kitchen. Students have achieved so much and grown in confidence throughout the year. Here are some highlights.

Our year 7s have been studying ' 'Breakfast on the hop'' and made American style pancakes, Cereal bars, banana muffins, breakfast wraps and scones.

Students had the option to make plain scones, fruit scones or cheese scones. Here are before and after photos of the excellent work. Mr Gale was lucky enough to sample them and his feedback was very positive.

For our final year 8 lessons we have been working on pastries and students have created their own recipes. There was a mixture of savery and sweet treats. The cherry pie and lemon meringue pie was top quality and could have been served at a Michelin star restaurant.

Another popular lesson was Sushi - Something most students had not experienced before and some were apprehensive about eating 'seaweed!'. The results were again outstanding.

Well done to all the students on a great year and look forward to continuing their culinary journey.

house Helpers

Each week, each of our Heads of House is supported by some of their students.  They seem to get more creative by the week.

Religious studies with Mr Baker

This week, Mr. Baker's Year 9 Religious Studies class concluded their unit on wealth, poverty, and the diverse religious responses to these complex issues. The students actively participated in engaging debates, exploring whether poverty could ever truly be eradicated and the moral obligations of both religious and non-religious individuals in addressing these challenges.

Exploring Bovey Tracey Through Art and Lens

This week, under the blaze of the summer sun, our art and photography group set off on a vibrant creative field trip through some of Devon’s most visually rich locations: Stover Country Park, the quirky Jolly Roger Lifesize Models, and the Make Southwest exhibition in Bovey Tracey.

Our first stop, Stover Country Park, offered a perfect blend of natural serenity and artistic inspiration. Surrounded by a tranquil lake, woodland trails, and the poetry trail, students captured the dappled sunlight through trees, practiced photography composition techniques, and experimented with macro shots of wildlife and foliage.

We then ventured to Jolly Roger Lifesize Models, a hidden gem bursting with eccentric character. From life-size pirates to mythical creatures, the space provided a surreal, playful backdrop for creative photography. It sparked ideas for sculpture and storytelling, blending the bizarre with the humorous — a great contrast to the peaceful naturalism of Stover.

The final stop brought us into the cool, curated interior of Make Southwest in Bovey Tracey. The contemporary craft exhibition showcased everything from ceramics and textiles to woodworking and metalwork, giving students first hand insight into professional craftsmanship. It was an inspiring conclusion, bridging their outdoor creativity with the possibilities of applied art and design.

Hot, sun-soaked, and creatively fulfilled, we wrapped the day with tired feet and full sketchbooks — a perfect balance of landscape, light, and artistic discovery.

National Champion

Lydia has won the Regional Final of National Monologues competition "Contemporary Section" from over than 150 entries and was invited to perform in the final at the Ambassador Theatre  London West End this weekend.

Lydia has also achieved Merit at her ABRSM Musical Theatre grade 5 exam last week.

Daisy's success

Daisy successfully auditioned for young company at Torquay Pantomimes Sleeping Beauty at Princess theatre.
There were 65 dancers at the audition and the company only needed 16. Daisy is part of Blue team. Well done!
