 Music Technology

27.9.19 MP3 Angel

The Year 9 Music Technology students have made an excellent start to the year developing their sequencing skills through a remix of Billie Eilish’s ‘Bury A Friend’. Over the last week, students have programmed their own rhythms using Ultrabeat and composed a bassline using MIDI.

Y12 Music Students Rock in The Platform

Our Y12 Music students were beyond excited to complete their debut official assessment performances in The Platform this week. Their performances looked and sounded absolutely incredible in the new space.  After a performance to the Year 7s, our Sixth Formers spent time mentoring their fellow students.

Classic Film Club Lands at the Platform

27.9.19 cinema 1

Last Thursday lunchtime saw the inaugural meeting of the Classic Film Club organised by the Media Studies Department. With the aim of introducing students to films they may never have considered watching before and films with artistic and creative significance, screenings will take place over the year and introduce a broad range of genres and interests. The club is open to students from all year groups and is aimed at those with an interest in film.

The first film to be shown over the next few weeks is Steven Spielberg’s early classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind made in 1977. With a musical score by John Williams (who he later collaborated with on E.T and Indiana Jones) the Platform’s incredible sound system is really going to be shown at its best.
After a brief welcome and introduction from Miss Brayne, Head of Media Studies, students from year 7 all the way up to Media students in year 13 enjoyed the dramatic opening scenes together from the comfort of their seats. Part Two continues this week!

The Geography department took over 120 year 10 students out on Monday and Tuesday to conduct their GCSE physical field work at Dawlish Warren. We managed to avoid the bad weather long enough to collect all the data needed in preparation for the exam in Year 11. All students were a real credit to the school and worked hard and sensibly!

A Level Photography field trip to Wistman’s Wood, Dartmoor

27.9.19 A Level Photog.

Last Tuesday afternoon saw Mrs Lynch and Mr Whelan taking out a group of very excited and enthusiastic A Level Photography students for a photo-shoot in Wistman’s Wood on Dartmoor. The weather was atrocious and they were very tempted to head back to the minibus after half an hour of getting soaked to the skin. But the students insisted on making it all the way to the woods to complete their shoot.

The students were fighting with the elements, whilst ducking the downpours and finding gaps in the storm to take their photographs.  We were delighted with the resulting photographs and the students are looking forward to their next field trip. Hopefully in better weather next time!

Team TA Sports Roundup

Year 11 Football team through to round 2 of the national cup after 11 goal thriller!

27.9.19 y11 football

On Tuesday the year 11 football team took on Newton Abbot College in round one of the national cup. The game was end to end from start to finish with both sides constantly exchanging attacks. NAC took the lead on the twenty minute mark before two quick goals from strike Kyle Higgins put TA 2-1 up at half time. Early in the second half NAC equlaised before TA caught out NAC again with two quick fire goals from Higgins again and Jacob Thomas. With ten minutes remaining NAC started to throw everything at TA and managed to level the score at 4-4 sending the game into extra time. The first half of extra time saw TA take the lead again through that man Kyle Higgins going in 5-4 at the break. The goal of the game came late in the second period of extra time when Ryan Wilson managed to beat 4 or 5 NAC players in the box before cooling slotting home. NAC grabbed a consolation right at the end but it was TA who go through to face Wet Exe in the next round.

Man of the Match was Kyle Higgins with 4 goals.

Football Academy

This week we faced Exeter College in the ECFA Premier league at Coach Road, after a great start in this league we needed to keep it going against a strong Exeter team. The step up to the Premier college league has been a goal of ours since we started and I am proud to say we have adapted well to the standard and level of professionalism within the league set up.

The Exeter game was a tough one with both teams wanting to play, it was nice to see the talent on show from both sides.  The first half was very tight with few chances for both sides as we cancelled each other out.

The second half started brightly with us making the most of our wingers and stretching the opposition back four. Our first goal came from Josh Parry beating the full back and centre half before squaring it to Joe Belsten who had the awareness to roll in Zack to finish first time from the angle. The goal came 8 minutes into the second half breeding confidence into our team allowing our ball players to take hold of the game.  For the next 38 minutes both teams worked hard to create chances but couldn’t add to the scoreline.

In the 92nd minute Exeter broke down our right side and made the most of a mistimed tackle to enter our box on the angle; a clever bit of skill allowed their striker to finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

After the initial disappointment of letting the lead go our lads still looked hungry to go for it in the last minutes to go for the win. We took the kick off and played into Belsten who played in Parry down the wing, he again used his pace and skill to beat the fullback before crossing into the 6 yard box for Charlie Cuss to slot home within 24 seconds of the restart giving us the 2-1 win on the day.

The character of the group is amazing and this day showed that we never give up.  elow are the goals from the game and some stats of the distance covered by the players via our Playertek software

Six in Six

27.9.19 6 in 6 127.9.19 6 in 6 2

Some of our year 7 students spent their holiday getting lost between the pages of a good book, having taken up our “Six in Six” summer challenge. The challenge we set them was to read six books over the course of the six week holiday, and to write a review for each book they read.

The response was amazing, with nearly 50 students undertaking the challenge. During their induction day, back in July, the students were set the challenge and given the opportunity to explore our fantastic study centre and borrow some books for the summer.
A wide variety of books were borrowed with varied genres, ranging from horror to comedy. The variety didn’t stop there with the completed book reviews showcasing student’s talents in both literacy and art.
Every student who completed our “Six in Six” challenge was today awarded with a certificate and a badge for their hard work and effort. I am sure that this dedication to reading and learning is only the first of many achievements that they will make at Torquay Academy.
