Officers, a tour of the theatre and lots of certificates

Staff complete officer training

Just before the Easter Holidays Malcolm Adams and Mr Brett undertook their Initial Officer training course at Cranwell in readiness to launch the CCF RAF section to Torquay Academy. Thee had as tough a training experience as they have ever had but they came away thinking that they had learnt a lot and were well equipped to lead the New Contingent. These photographs were taken in College Hall Officer’s Mess which is steeped in history. It was a real honour for them to be presented our Certificates of Achievement where many great past and present Airmen had stood previously. The Officer team will also include Mr Chadwick and today we appointed the School Staff Instructor, Mr Cawood, who completes the team for now. The role out can begin. A small group will undertake training this term in readiness for them to lead the cadets in September. Later this term the CCF will put on an Open afternoon to give Year 8 a taste of what it is to be a cadet. There will be 27 places in September and a waiting list. This is the start of a really exciting range of opportunity for our students.

A tour of the new theatre

The theatre is really starting to take shape so I thought I would share with you some photographs I took along with some new render images we have been given.

The main entrance corridor will be filled with light as it opens into the first floor and a large light box above it.

The main theatre is starting to take shape.  It really is a huge space and will have 310 tiered seats.

This will give you an impression of what the stage area will look like.

Downstairs there will be a dance studio and an activity suite.

Upstairs will be home to three PE classrooms.

The insulation is currently being added to the outside of the building.

Careers Interviews

26.4.19 Careers interviews

We were pleased to host independent careers interviews today for several of our year 11 students which was a great success.  The students found them most helpful, and the careers advisers were highly impressed with the students they spoke to. More will be taking place next week.

Year 6 Transition Day

26.4.19 SVPS Transition Day

I was delighted to meet a lovely group of Year 6 students from Sherwell Valley on Thursday.  They came over with Mr Kingston to meet with Mr Jones and a group of ex-Sherwell students to start the transition process.   All of the children who attended will be coming to TA in September to start in Year 7, and they spent the morning with Mr Jones and ex-Sherwell Valley students who are currently in Year 7. Firstly the children were given a tour of the school with Mr Jones, discussing different aspects, and observing what was happening both inside and outside of classrooms. The children then mingled with current Year 7s in the playground at break before being able to talk and listen to them talk about their first year at TA to help prepare them for the move from primary to secondary school. It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning and Mr Jones was very impressed with the children. He will be visiting Sherwell Valley a couple more times this term as this work continues in readiness for September.  I hope their morning gave them a great insight into what their lives will be like in September.

New homework books ready for cycle 4

I can’t quite believe we are about to start the final cycle of the year!  I am very proud of the pride of students take in their bespoke exercise and homework books.  A great deal of time and effort goes into ensuring that our students have access to the very best resources.  The new homework books arrived this week ready for Monday.

Year 7 Students in Guard of Honour for Exeter Chiefs

26.4.19 Y7 Exeter Chiefs

Four Year 7 Students joined the Torquay Athletic RFC Super Sunday trip to the Exeter Chiefs on April 14th. As part of the day they enjoyed a training session run by the professional coaches, had a tour of the training facilities, then formed a ‘guard of honour’ for the Exeter Chiefs vs Wasps game. Immaculate behaviour, physical effort and enjoyment was observed from all of the team. The day culminated with many photos and autographs from several international rugby players, including Henry Slade, Jack Nowell, Elliot Daly and Tomos Francis. Congratulations on an amazing season of School and Club Rugby to William Harrison, Robin Pightling, Jay Tout and William Reed.

Racing Hannah

29.3.19 Hannah Metcalf

Sunday 14th April saw Hannah run in the Honiton Calf 3K multi-terrain race. She was disappointed that the stream crossing was deemed too deep to include this year but there was plenty of hills, mud & trail.
She gave a strong run to finish 1st U13 girl, well done Hannah.

Literacy Intervention Attendance

26.4.19 Literacy Intervention

This week we awarded the students who received 100% attendance during the spring term for their literacy intervention. These students have shown great dedication and commitment to their learning.
