1.11.19 Cadets

30 young people joined the RAF Cadets at the end of September and had a couple of taster sessions before making the commitment to become a RAF Cadet. From there they have worked really hard at their drill and were able to put on an impressive passing in parade for their parents and loved ones on the Friday before half term.

The Cadets were issued their uniform in time for the parade and were shown how to iron it so they had all had some new experiences along with climbing and some of the fieldcraft skills. On parade, the Visiting Officer Squadron Leader Tanner handed out their berets and cap badges and spoke to the parents about how well the students had done in such a short time.  We were all very proud of all of the students who took part.

The cadets are now settling into a winter diet of training towards their Part 1 test (which will enable them to fly), practical skills like radio work and navigation and various types of physical training. We are looking to expanding our offer to the cadets to include some specialist kit such as flight simulation equipment which we would like to buy in to make their experience as realistic as possible before they go flying for real. We are trying to identify businesses or sponsors that would like to get involved in helping give our RAF Cadets the best possible experience in the South West.

Duke of Edinburgh Silver Expedition

1.11.19 D of E31.11.19 D of E1

There was a historic moment for Torquay Academy as the first-ever Silver students left school on Saturday the 19th October to undertake their 3 day and 2 night Expedition. They started out in a suitably remote spot not far from Lustleigh Cleve. All they had to do was navigate and work together to get to their campsite which was 11 miles away. A successful first day was rewarded with an amazing view of the night sky with the stars shining brightly and temperatures of 5C. Day 2 was always going to be challenging as it had two moorland sections but the day started brightly so spirits were high.

An adventure or two on the way saw some very good navigation bring the team safely to their second night’s stop near Ivybridge. Teamwork was really coming into its own as everyone had found the day tough at some point and the cooking was a real highlight as everyone mucked in together and everything got eaten. The final day was the real challenge.

No one had done a 3rd day expedition before and it was an emotional experience for the students who really dug deep to get to Newton Ferrers. An amazing effort all round in encouraging each other and using each other’s strengths to get through. A thank you to all the staff involved who made this possible. Congratulations to Elias Rawles, Josh Poston, Jack Manley, Daisy Poole-Crampton, Lizzie Harris and Sophie Rick.

Artisan gallery recently launched a schools art competition entitled ‘My World’

1.11.19 Gallery 1.11.19 My planet

Students across The Bay were invited to respond to the theme in any way they wished, be it through drawing, painting, photography or 3D work.  Three of our most successful photography students were selected to take part in the exhibition and came away winning the top three prizes!  Rebbecca Hall, who gained a 9 at GCSE Photography, took the first prize for KS4 with her triptych of photographs entitled ‘ Alex’s World’. Natalie Klien who gained an A at A Level photography, took the first prize for KS5 with her photograph ‘My Planet’ and Jasmin Cresser was given an additional award for showing excellent technical ability in her piece entitled ‘Hannah loves flowers’.

The competition was sponsored by Cavana Homes, who also funded the private view and the fabulous books that were awarded to the students.  Mrs Lynch was absolutely thrilled that our students did so well in gaining such recognition for their hard work and dedication. Mrs Lynch proudly added “The work produced by our TA photography students, really highlighted the amazing talent we have in The Creative Arts Department, we really did outshine the other schools”.
